Markiplier

Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach found new success when his horror film adaptation of Iron Lung broke box office records over the past weekend. He is the first YouTuber to produce an independent theater release without distributors or high-profile directors backing the project. Iron Lung made over 7 times its original $3 million budget, reaching up to $21.7 million globally.

He later discovered on The Numbers that the movie’s box office earnings can no longer be viewed publicly as of Feb. 2nd. The YouTube community quickly identified that the threat was not a website glitch, but Hollywood’s top production studios, including Disney.

How Markiplier Adapted Iron Lung

Markiplier’s Iron Lung is an adaptation of David Szymanski’s 2022 cosmic horror. Fischbach was mesmerized by the game’s claustrophobic concept of someone who yearns to live as they test their survival in a sea of blood. According to the YouTuber, he loved that Syzmanski did not give the player one threat, but multiple indicators that can influence paranoia.

His fans were later treated to Iron Lung’s movie teaser on April 23, 2023. Both his community and the game’s playerbase immediately recognized the SM13’s submarine setup. Markiplier also eased their worries that Szymanski co-wrote the film’s 2-hour script. The DUSK developer used this opportunity to expand the game’s lore, further exploring the 4th blood ocean exposition on Moon AT-5. Scientists selected a convict named Simon to take photographs for any discoveries.

Iron Lung Became the Indie’s Hollywood Disruptor

When the Jan. 30 opening weekend arrived, Markiplier only sought to topple Sam Raimi’s 2026 horror comedy, Send Help. The film was originally supposed to only screen in cinemas for one week until the box office tallied its earnings. Send Help earned a daily gross of $7.27 million and was unfortunately beaten by its competitor to reach the number 1 spot. Iron Lung raked in a daily gross of $8.9 million, a surprising amount that caught Szymanski off guard, and he responded on his X (then Twitter), “What the f***!?”

Markiplier achieved this because he understood the power of his audience. His previous works on the then-creator streaming service, YouTube Originals, were interactive adventures that allowed his viewers to choose between storyline choices to see where they and Fischbach could go next.

In Space with Markiplier was the final film project he produced during the creator-run service’s final days. The 2-part interactive experience garnered 31.3 million views. Fischbach relied on word of mouth to market the film, while Centurion Film Service handled theater bookings.

Another contribution is that Fischbach did not rely solely on his YouTube filmmaking. He collaborated with the production crew’s expertise to create an immersive horror experience. For example, Szymanski assisted in the film’s writing to establish what is and isn’t possible in Iron Lung.

He shares his team’s pride in an IndieWire interview. He said, “I can respect [my crew’s] time and their craft so they can give output that is magnified. It would not be nearly as enjoyable or a successful movie without that.” He then added after seeing earnings reached up to $22.4 million, “I can’t wait to give the crew a bonus.”

Markiplier Clings Onto the Daily Box Office Charts

When Markiplier posted that Iron Lung was missing from the Box Office charts on Instagram, this successfully upset the YouTube community and indie filmmakers. At first, many suspected that the main culprit could be Disney. The indie cosmic horror was mysteriously replaced by Zootopia 2 on Jan. 31, followed by First Lady Melania’s documentary on Feb. 1.

Spectators recognized that the true threat is Hollywood itself. In days, journalists and influencers discussed how Fischbach’s success may have frightened the movie industry. According to the director himself, Hollywood needs to strategize on what audiences actually want to watch more than the critics themselves.

Bill and Sam Herting of Centurion Film Service took his advice when they originally wanted Iron Lung to feature in three theaters, which Fischbach saw as an insult to his 38 million subscribers. The Numbers have listed that the film is currently featured in over 3,000 locations globally.

His words justify the mixed reviews of critics and the audience on how they perceive Iron Lung. Rotten Tomatoes has rated the film up to 45% on the Tomatometer. Most believed that the film lacked a strong plot. The audience, on the other hand, on the Popcornmeter has reached 89%.

Not just for Markiplier’s acting, but also for staying true to the original 2022 game and its immersion, which requires viewers to pay attention to dangers. Though Fischbach does agree that he will never be in another acting role again because it gave him too much freedom, and he would rather concentrate on directing.

The movie industry is watching his efforts break the attendance records by talent rather than an expensive budget. Iron Lung worked with a budget of over $3 million and quickly recouped it in a single weekend. James Cameron’s Avatar:

Fire and Ash had a similar effect when the movie recouped its $400 million production costs on Dec. 24, 2025, five days after its release. Both directors understood what their audience wanted to see, and caring for the production spoke louder than the distributor. And as of Feb. 4, Markiplier returned to the Daily Box Office chart, reaching number 1 for the third time.
