Sonic, Tails, Knuckles

Typically, with the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, it’s a foregone conclusion that a new movie will follow the current one. When the first movie came out, the post-credits scene teased a sequel that felt inevitable and was then announced. That was true again for the second and third films.

The third film teased a fourth with Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, and it has been officially slated for March 2027. That’s still a good bit in the future, but before we even make it to the release of that film, a fifth Sonic movie has already been announced and put on the schedule.

Fifth Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Confirmed Before Fourth Released

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is still in active development. It’s being made and will be released a little over a year from now. Well in advance, we already know there’s going to be a fifth movie, and it’s already on the release calendar. It will come out on December 22, 2028, about a year and a half after the fourth movie.

What’s important to note here is that it is not necessarily being described as Sonic the Hedgehog 5. Instead, it’s been labeled a “Sonic event film,” which I can’t help but feel is a pretty major distinction. Barring a surprise turn of events, there will be a direct sequel to the fourth movie in this series, but it doesn’t sound like this is that.

ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, without specific insider info, speculated that this event film may well be a spinoff. The series spun off into a harmless but somewhat forgotten Knuckles series, but there is still plenty of opportunity to make this into an MCU-level series.

Of course, every single character other than Sonic himself (and excluding the human characters, which are slowly becoming less and less important) could be the focus of a spinoff. The most popular option is Shadow the Hedgehog, as he was an instant fan favorite portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the third movie.

Of course, that movie ended with a slightly ambiguous hint that Shadow survived the events of the film, perfectly setting up his own movie. With how popular the character is and how great Reeves did, it would be a surprise if Shadow didn’t return.

Tails is another candidate since he has been around since the second film, like Knuckles, who already got his own starring role. This would be less exciting than a Shadow spinoff, but it’s very plausible. Amy Rose and Metal Sonic haven’t technically been part of the movies yet, but they will be, and one of them could be a spinoff focus.

Eventually, Silver the Hedgehog will arrive in a Sonic movie. Could this be Paramount and SEGA’s way of introducing his storyline? It would be very MCU-esque to introduce him in his own project and then tie it into the main movies, thereby creating interwoven branches that could split off and intertwine with one another.

Given the trajectory of this franchise, it’s also feasible that Big the Cat, Espio, Jet, and Rougue the Bat will eventually appear, so they could similarly be involved in this event film. Whatever it is, it’s extremely exciting for fans of the excellent video game adaptation series.

Conclusion

The Sonic movie franchise continues to do what no other video game adaptations have yet: develop into a sprawling, well-liked series that continues to get better and better. There are six projects within this series, which is more than the Mario movies, the Fallout show, and The Last of Us, so Paramount, SEGA, and Team Sonic continue to do things really well.
