Timothee Chalamet, Batman

Casting is not yet underway for the DCU’s Batman, but that hasn’t stopped names like Timothee Chalamet from being included in the hunt. There are rumors, fan castings, and more, but there is nothing official. As of now, pretty much anyone is conceivably possible within the parameters we expect based on what we know about the movie. That includes, believe it or not, Chalamet.

Timothee Chalamet has yet to play any sort of superhero or villain of that nature. His role as Paul Atreides in Dune is the closest he’s come, and that’s really a stretch. While comic book movies and superhero films are definitely not as taboo as they once were, Chalamet has focused generally on more prestigious work.

He’s openly in pursuit of an Oscar, and a superhero isn’t the Oscar nomination role he usually does. Although it’s certainly plausible that Chalamet, with the right style of project, could earn an Oscar nomination playing a superhero. He could probably earn a nomination doing anything, and Angela Bassett got a nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Nevertheless, this is not something he’s done yet, and it’s likely because of another actor, one he’s ironically up against for Best Actor this year: Leonardo DiCaprio. Via Variety, he said in 2024, “Well, Leonardo DiCaprio said to me, ‘No superhero movies, no hard drugs.’ Which I thought was very good. I follow them both! But the movie that made me want to act is a superhero movie, ‘The Dark Knight.’ If the script was great, if the director was great, I’d have to consider it.”

Thus far, he’s followed the advice carefully, but that last statement certainly leaves the door open. Chalamet isn’t going to jump into the MCU as a random supporting character, but the right project could certainly call to him. And since he admitted that he got into acting because of a Batman movie, it’d be awfully fitting of him to play Batman.

People thought Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson would both be awful as Batman, so the public perception of Chalamet (which isn’t great right now, weirdly) as Bruce Wayne and Batman would be irrelevant. He’s more than got the skill to pull anything, including a superhero, off with relative ease.

ScreenRant’s Felipe Rangel said it best, “Given his ‘The Dark Knight’ connection, I believe Chalamet would be open to playing Batman if the script were good. At 29, Chalamet could match David Corenswet’s Superman, who is 32, nicely. The actor’s casting would likely prove controversial due to the kind of actor most fans have in mind for Batman, but Robert Pattinson proved in The Batman that it would work.”

Chalamet is quickly becoming one of the actors that casual moviegoers are tired of seeing. They claim that Chalamet, Pedro Pascal, and others are in too many things and that Hollywood only uses the same actors. His potential role as Batman would do nothing to change that perception, even if it’s entirely false.

Is Chalamet likely to be James Gunn’s pick for Batman: The Brave and the Bold? It is highly unlikely. Gunn’s style doesn’t lend itself to Chalamet’s, and he’d be going in a totally different direction to make that move. Would it work? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Conclusion

Until James Gunn actually reveals who’s going to be his version of Batman in the new-look DCU, then we can only speculate. We don’t know much about the movie, which is why virtually anything is possible. As strange as it sounds, that includes Timothee Chalamet as perhaps the most iconic superhero at all, even if it’s highly improbable.
