Yesterday, PlayStation hosted its State of Play livestream to show off what is planned for the console in the near future. There were plenty of exciting new games shown off, giving gamers ample reason to get excited for the near (and probably distant, too) future. Here’s what has me the most excited to pick up a controller, excluding projects like Wolverine that we already knew about.
The Best Things Shown at State of Play
5. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

I’ve never played a Castlevania game, but after delving into Hollow Knight: Silksong (a Metroidvania, so it shares some elements here) last year, I might have to try. From a casual perspective, Belmont’s Curse looks like a lot of fun, so it automatically lands on my radar that way after State of Play. But from a gaming perspective, even I know how significant this is. There hasn’t been a new Castlevania in over a decade, so a return to glory for this once-beloved franchise is a big deal.
4. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is pretty exciting, even though I have yet to play a Metal Gear game. After playing Death Stranding, I made up my mind to check out other Hideo Kojima works, so they’re on the backlog. Learning that more of the older games will be available (with MGS4 no longer tied to the PS3) was an exciting moment from Sony’s State of Play.
3. Ghost of Yotei DLC
I haven’t played Ghost of Yotei yet, but having just recently beaten Ghost of Tsushima, you can bet it’s coming soon. This new DLC looks amazing, and the fact that it’s adding multiplayer could be exciting. Plenty of other excellent story games have tried and failed to add a multiplayer wrinkle (looking at you, Red Dead Redemption 2) that lives up to the single-player experience, so perhaps Yotei will help break that curse.
2. New God of War
I’m lumping the two major God of War announcements into one incredible declaration here. God of War is back. Sons of Sparta looks like a lot of fun, and I’m pretty intrigued by a 2D sidescrolling platformer in this franchise. But what truly has me excited is the remake trilogy of the first three games. Months ago, when I finished playing God of War (2018), I began looking to see if I could buy the original games and play them. Aside from III, they weren’t available on PS5, but now, they will be. This trilogy is probably not coming for a while, but I’m still extremely excited.
1. John Wick Game
The new John Wick game announced at State of Play does not even have a name. It doesn’t have a release date, either. Whenever that day is, it’s a day I am patiently waiting for. The John Wick movies are fantastic, and there’s absolutely a gold mine of possibilities for an action video game. It looks fantastic, and the combat is sure to be epic. Looping in movie director Chad Stahelski to work on the project, which is set to be canon to the film universe, only adds to the level of excitement.
Conclusion
State of Play might not have had what everyone was expecting or dreaming about (namely, a Bloodborne remaster), but it was extremely exciting nonetheless. Plenty of good games were announced, awesome trailers shown off, and more. Even the games we already knew about look a whole lot better now that we’ve had a deeper dive, like Wolverine and 007: First Light. It’s an exciting time to be a gamer and to have a PlayStation 5.
