Poppy Playtime studio, Mob Entertainment, had an interesting week after releasing Chapter 5’s gameplay trailer on Feb. 11. The playerbase gave a mixed reception at the episode’s presentation. After the fans solved the October ARG, more characters were introduced along with a plausible leak of the Prototype/Experiment 1006’s face. Mob Entertainment soon faced controversy for certain development choices. So what exactly happened within that week?
Who’s Appearing in Poppy Playtime Chapter 5?
Chapter 5’s gameplay trailer welcomes the protagonist into the deepest level of the Playtime Co. Factory, the Labs. Previously, players were left on a cliffhanger with Huggy Wuggy slamming against the door. He returns with a thirst for blood because the unnamed hero led him to a nasty fall back in Poppy Playtime Chapter 1. The blue long-limbed creature will chase players in the Labs’ corridors.
Two new major characters, Lily Lovebraid and Giblet, are added as possible final puzzle pieces to the game’s lore. Giblet tells the player, “You’re the one they keep talking about! You’re not the first one to take out the Prototype.” Viewers assumed “they” are the surviving toys who escaped Experiment 1006’s grasp during the Toy War.
The community learned about the Toy War from Chapter 4’s unfortunate villain, Doey the Doughman. He and Poppy have a deep history, for she attempted to escape Playtime Co. but realized that she and the toys would draw too much attention. They had planned to kill the robotic being after receiving a call from a Playcare orphan named Ollie, but Poppy got captured by the Prototype and was placed back in her case in the Poppy Room. Without her, the surviving toys were left in the care of Doey.
Lily Lovebraid is currently a mystery in what her role holds. Some fans speculated that she could be part of the Mommy Longlegs’ toy line due to her long purple braids. Unlike the pink stretchy spider, her braids act as tentacles, as shown in the recent trailer and a scorpion tail from her reveal trailer. She’s shown to have a childlike wonder based on her tea party scene. She later chases the player within her dollhouse and wraps the player in her hair when they are captured.
Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 is confirmed to be the final episode of the long-running episodic horror. The Prototype walks across all the remains of the previous threats in a halway slowly burning. Its metal claw pierces Poppy’s glass case that holds her porcelain doll mask. It plans to be together again by using the Labs’ Operation Theater. The broken glass hints at its single glowing eye at the trailer’s end.
Why Did the Latest Trailer Upset the Poppy Playtime Community?
After seeing Lily Lovebraids’ full-body design, a majority of fans felt her cartoonish appearance did not belong in Poppy Playtime. Mob Entertainment artist Amber Odgen has admitted that she is not satisfied with this Playtime Co. toy’s 3D model either. A handful of her co-workers have disagreed and believe the fans are quick to judge Lily from the final trailer alone. They do have a point after seeing that her composition is very glossy and has less realistic textures once you look away from the hair strands.
Another complaint revolves around an area where the protagonist uses an ice cream truck to ram into a gate. Fans commented that the assets seen felt like something straight out of Garten of Banban. Mob Entertainment’s technical artist Tobias “Toby” Cascia gave an awkward response in the Poppy Playtime Discord. He tried to play coy, saying, “Oh, that part, it makes sense on the lore, but you don’t know about it yet.” YouTuber Sheeprampage believes the Operation Theater and the Labs had a playground area that’s similar to Playcare.
The last straw is the reveal of the Prototype’s true face. Since Halloween, Mob Entertainment has shared a celebratory image featuring carved jack-o’-lanterns. Thanks to the new Poppy Playtime trailer, the community has found easter eggs, including the new Star Wristband that detects nearby enemies.
Then, an unofficial leak by X (then Twitter) user Antapo posted a modeled face from Unreal Engine. Mob Entertainment did report and have the post removed, but now that face is everywhere. Aside from the YouTube fan-made thumbnails, fans theorized Antapo’s post found the face on the center pumpkin. It matches Experiment 1006’s single eye. Everything else about it is pure speculating for its face is hidden in the shadows.
When is Chapter 5’s Launch?
The indie mascot horror was first released on Oct. 12, 2021, marking over four years of its journey. The final chapter of Poppy Playtime will arrive on Feb. 18. The game will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
