The stars gathered last night for the 98th Academy Awards. One of the pre-show favorites, One Battle After Another, dominated the night with six awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay, both wins for Paul Thomas Anderson. Sinners racked up a record number of nominations (16) and won four awards, highlighted by Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who became the first woman to win an Oscar for Cinematography
Jessie Buckley was named Best Actress for her performance in Hamnet, and Amy Madigan took home the Best Supporting Actress Award for her turn in Weapons. And, for only the seventh time in the 98-year history of the awards show, one category ended in a tie. The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva both took home an Oscar for Best Live-Action Short.
The ceremony also marked the introduction of a new category: best achievement in casting, with “One Battle After Another” taking home the inaugural award. It is the first category added to the awards since best animated feature was introduced in 2001.
The Oscars were hosted by Conan O’Brien for the second consecutive year. The awards, as always, were held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event was broadcast live on ABC and streamed on Hulu.
