The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for a new manager. This morning, they fired long-time manager Rob Tomson, who had been with the organization for the past five seasons. This could be a shock due to the name, but from where the rest of the MLB sees it, it might have been time. Let’s dive into the firing and Thomson’s success with the team.
Phillies Fire Tomson
After being tied for the worst record in the MLB, the Philadelphia Phillies have decided to make a change. As of this morning, they have fired manager Rob Thomson. In his first season with the team back in 2022, Thomson led the Phillies to their first World Series appearance since 2009. They would lose 4-2 to the Houston Astros, but the team has had a lot of success in the regular season.
After their WS loss, Philly had seasons of 90, 95, and 95 wins, an overall record of 355-270. That level of consistency is what franchises strive for. The 2026 season has gotten off to a start no one could predict. Through their first 28 games, they are tied with the New York Mets for the worst record in the MLB. With the talent on this roster, that is unacceptable. You’ve got Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trae Turner, JT Realmuto, and an abundance of great pitching.
The Phillies aren’t just one of the worst teams record-wise; statistically, they’re a nightmare. They rank 28th worst in runs, OPS, BA, TB, Runs Allowed, OPSA, BAA, and TBA. Philly sits in 4th place in the NL East and is 10.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the division and 6.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.
Final Thoughts
