Well, that was fast. The Orlando Magic have fired their head coach, Jamahl Mosley, this morning. After going up 3-1 on the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, the Magic lost three straight games, including Game 6 in which they were up 24 in the second half, to lose the series. Let’s dive into what led to his dismissal and who Orlando could target next!
Magic Fire Mosley

There were rumors that Mosley was on the hot seat for the last few months of the NBA regular season. From butting heads with superstar Paolo Banchero to underachieving with the roster, a change needed to be made. Mosley took over in 2021-2022 and led the Magic to three straight playoff appearances and two division titles. With an overall record of 189-221, it was time for a change.
Mosley’s Replacement

With there being a head coach opening, the preferred replacement is former Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan. I think that would be a great hire for their young core. This team has a plethora of talent with Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane, and a bunch of nice role players. We saw Donovan do a solid job with lesser talent on the Bulls. I wouldn’t be shocked if Tom Thibodeau gets a call.
Final Thoughts
I am not shocked that the Magic got rid of Mosley. He didn’t raise the floor of this team. I would argue he lowered the ceiling given the talent they have. What do you make of the dismissal of their head coach? Who would you hire as the Magic’s next head coach?
