Fable, Xbox, GTA 6

Fable, which was supposed to be out later this year, has been delayed. The hit RPG franchise that’s being rebooted for a modern platform and audience will not be part of the exciting slate of 2026 games. It’s the second time this has happened. Games being delayed now is unfortunately all too common, and Fable fell prey to that, putting it in concerning territory.

Fable Lands Another Delay

One delay is rather insignificant. Two delays, however, start to introduce worry. Anything beyond that and there’s an increased chance that the game ends up cancelled or awful. Generally speaking, delays aren’t good. We will see what becomes of the highly anticipated GTA 6 once it’s released after several delays.

According to reports, Fable is set to be released in February 2027. It was originally announced with a 2025 launch in mind. Then, it was delayed more than a year to December 2026. Now, it’s been pushed back just a couple of months. That means it’s been delayed roughly two years from its initial goal, which is certainly worrisome.

Xbox claims that this delay is to avoid clashing with GTA 6. “In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we’re moving ‘Fable’ to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves,” Xbox stated via Polygon.

Chief content officer Matt Booty said, “The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We’re excited about where the game is. We really just wanted [Fable] to have its own moment to shine.” Based on that, there’s no reason to be concerned.

However, we have to take that information with a grain of salt, especially in an age where multiple delays for video games have become ridiculously commonplace.

Why Games Get Delayed Now

If a video game gets announced and a release date or window is revealed, it’s a minor miracle if the game comes out on that date. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight avoided the delay fate. GTA 6 and others haven’t. Some have been delayed and then cancelled, so whenever there’s a delay for any game, it’s cause for concern, even if it’s highly common. Why is that?

There are several reasons for it. First is that game studios announce games too early. The life cycle of a game now consists of announcement, development, release date confirmation, delay, and release. The smarter, safer method would be to develop it, almost finish it, announce it with a release date, and then finish up between then and the launch.

This would prevent a myriad of other issues as well, like buggy or poorly-received launches (looking at you, Cyberpunk 2077). It would also prevent the game from being delayed or allowing worry to creep into fans’ minds, because they wouldn’t even know about it until it was borderline ready to launch.

Another reason this happens is that game development (and everything in the world) has become so expensive that studios, especially big AAA ones, try to find ways to cut corners. It often leaves the product in a less-than-desirable state, and it’s then delayed to try to fix things. We can’t say for certain, but it sounds a little like this has been GTA 6‘s problem.

Alternatively, as Xbox stated, there can be delays to maximize profits. With GTA 6 hitting shelves in November, plenty of games will want to avoid a holiday launch. That is allegedly Fable‘s plan, as people will likely be more willing to buy and play it months after the initial GTA hype has subsided.

Conclusion

For now, Fable is poised for a February release, which is admittedly not too long after the previous release date. However, with two delays under the belt now, the idea that it won’t be delayed again at all seems a little silly. We may end up waiting a long time for this one, and that’s a shame because it looks quite good. Hopefully, it really is just down to scheduling conflicts.
