Rebecca Haro

At a court hearing in Riverside, California, Rebecca Haro pleaded guilty to criminal charges in connection with the death of her missing 7-month-old son, Emmanuel Haro.

Death of Emmanuel Haro

Rebecca Haro, 42, and her husband, Jake Haro, 33, were initially charged with murder and filing a false police report in their infant’s presumed death. The parents reported the child missing on August 14, 2025, claiming that he was taken while the mother was changing his diaper in a store parking lot.

Defendant Pleads Guilty

Rebecca initially appeared in court for a preliminary hearing to determine whether she would stand trial on murder charges in August; however, the proceeding was cut short when her defense reached a plea agreement with the state.

Before the Riverside County Superior Judge Jerry Yang, the defendant pleaded guilty to one count of felony child abuse, one count of endangerment causing great bodily injury to a child under the age of five, one count of involuntary manslaughter, and one count of accessory after the fact.

The prosecution and defense agreed to sentence Rebecca to 12 years and eight months in a California state prison in exchange for dropping the murder charge. After presenting the sentencing agreement to the judge, Yang and Rebecca spent several minutes running through a standard series of questions about the plea agreement.

Judge Yang explained the terms, including the rights being waived, and asked Rebecca whether she understood what she was doing and related questions, to which she responded “Yes, Your Honor” to each.

Rebecca Haro Sentencing Terms

Instead of scheduling a sentencing date in the near future, the prosecution and defense agreed to waive the preparation period and have the court immediately impose the defendant’s punishment. The judge was amenable to the agreement and proceeded with Rebecca Haro’s sentencing.

In accordance with the plea deal, Yang ordered Rebecca’s sentences to run consecutively, crediting her 323 days for the time she has spent in pretrial detention and acknowledging her good behavior thus far.

Father’s Guilt Referenced in Hearing

The other defendant in the death of Emmanuel Haro is his father, Jake, who pleaded guilty in October 2025 to all charges against him, including violating probation in a separate child abuse case. He was sentenced the following month and was scorned by the son’s maternal grandmother in an impact statement.

The prosecution referenced Jake Haro’s sentencing hearing and how both parents’ fates have been sealed due to their atrocious actions. “This resolution reflects what I believe the evidence shows happened in those months, weeks, and days leading up to Emmanuel’s murder,” a prosecutor said.

Jake Haro was sentenced in November to 32 years to life for his sins of commission. In other words, it was his hands that physically took Emmanuel’s life. Rebecca Haro’s plea and sentence today reflect her sins of omission.”

Mother Chastised For Actions

Rebecca was audibly sobbing during the prosecution’s statements about who is at fault for the senseless murder of a young child. She had been on the verge of tears up to that point when she could no longer hold it in.

Instead of a victim impact statement, the prosecutor shared a criticizing soliloquy. “Because the two people in the world who should have been Emmanuel’s biggest advocates and protectors are solely responsible for his murder,” the prosecutor began.

While we don’t have evidence that she personally struck or shook her son, the evidence is clear that she repeatedly and consistently chose not to intervene on behalf of her son in spite of his evident and accelerating physical deterioration,” the prosecutor continued.

Her choice not to intervene was a choice to allow, if not facilitate, Emmanuel’s death. This defendant had a legal and moral responsibility as Emmanuel’s mother, and she failed in that duty. And that’s why she is here.
