If you weren’t paying close attention, you would think that there is an old-fashioned quarterback controversy brewing at the Minnesota Vikings headquarters in Eagan. With their general manager search concluded with the hiring of Nolan Teasley from the Seattle Seahawks, the “contest” between returning starter J.J. McCarthy and newly acquired veteran Kyler Murray supposedly heated up during the team’s organized team activities (OTAs) this past week.

The Vikings brass is doing a great job selling this idea of a quarterback controversy to the public and the press, but seasoned observers know the real story. So, while they talk about young Mr. McCarthy’s improvement and the fact that a decision hasn’t yet been made on who the starting QB will be for Week 1’s game against the Green Bay Packers, the facts on the field don’t lie.

Kyler Murray Lays Claim to the Quarterback 1 Position

Murray’s departure from the Arizona Cardinals was good fortune for the Vikings. Murray was the number one overall pick by the Cardinals in 2019, and he would go on to play in two Pro Bowls and pass for over 3,000 yards four times. But Arizona would sour on its franchise quarterback after an injury-plagued four seasons that finally led to his benching towards the end of last season. The relationship was so shattered that the Cardinals agreed to eat $36.5 million of Murray’s existing salary in order to cut him loose.

That allowed the Vikings to swoop in and sign the veteran quarterback for the veteran minimum of $1.3 million for the 2026-27 season. There were plenty of doubters when the trade was made. Negative comments included his size and ability to see over his offensive line, his inability to consistently complete passes over the middle, and his role as almost exclusively a shotgun-formation quarterback. Still, the gamble seemed worth it, what with his reduced salary and the 2025 struggles of young Mr. McCarthy.

J.J. McCarthy’s Rough Ride

The Vikings had high expectations for J.J. McCarthy at the start of the 2025 season. Despite missing his entire rookie campaign due to a knee injury, the Vikings felt confident enough in the second-year signal-caller to name him as the starting quarterback for a team that had Super Bowl aspirations.

However, aside from a Week 1 second-half comeback against the Chicago Bears, McCarthy’s first half of 2025 was one to forget. He looked unsteady in the pocket, unsure in the huddle, and he possessed little or no touch when he had to thread the needle on close coverage passes.

Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell simplified the Vikings’ playbook after McCarthy returned from a six-game injury absence in Week 9. He threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-24 win over the Detroit Lions, and his play seemed to stabilize over the next few weeks.

But McCarthy would miss two additional games down the stretch due to a concussion and a hand injury, and in between, his erratic play returned. The season ended with the Vikings having more questions than answers about the future of their franchise quarterback.

Quarterback Controversy?

When the Vikings acquired Murray on March 12 of this year, many wondered about McCarthy’s future as a Minnesota Viking. Was Murray’s acquisition the first step toward showing McCarthy the exit? Was the former Arizona star a stopgap replacement until McCarthy gained the confidence and experience to reclaim the number one quarterback position?

Or, had the Vikings created a classic quarterback controversy? How would this play out as the offseason continued up until the start of the NFL regular season? Most people who could adequately read the tea leaves understood that this was Murray’s job to lose, at least for the upcoming season.

His experience, along with the all-too-fresh memory of McCarthy’s dreadful 2025 campaign, almost ensured that the former Michigan Wolverine required more seasoning. On the field at the third OTA, McCarthy, by all accounts, demonstrated improved accuracy and exhibited more confidence on the field.

However, Murray was by far the superior quarterback on the field, demonstrating his refined mechanics, accuracy, and touch. The biggest stir came in the press room, where McCarthy showed indifference towards Murray’s presence on the team.

The former Cardinal said all the right things about the Michigan’s product’s development, and when asked about his current state of readiness, Murray replied, “My confidence is unshakeable.” So perhaps there is not an on-the-field quarterback controversy in Vikings land, but there appears to be an icy locker room environment.
