Rayman Legends Retold

One of the oldest PS1 mascots, Rayman, came back with a remake for his 31st anniversary. Rayman Legends Retold brings the Wii U classic to the PlayStation 5. Aside from the updated visuals and CGI cutscenes, this title has finally stopped fans from speculating over a confirmed remake title. Here’s what happened with the studio during the floating limb hero’s 13-year disappearance.

The Story of Rayman and Rayman Forever Cancelled

Back on Aug. 16, 2025, the Reddit forum “r/GamingLeaksandRumours” discussed two canceled Ubisoft projects surrounding the Rayman franchise. XCancel user @Rayman_Together informed that a former employee shared scrapped ideas from 2021 on LinkedIn. While their post did not provide the original source, they did provide screenshots from it.

Former Ubisoft artist Phong said, “In 2021, I had the opportunity to challenge myself at Ubisoft on a trial project for Rayman, but unfortunately, the project did not proceed.” Rayman_Together then shared the screenshot of the project’s logo. Two of the titles were The Story of Rayman and Rayman Forever.

Phong explained, “As part of the redesign of their flagship game, Ubisoft asked us to do some research on the game’s new logo and home screen. Rayman was THE GAME that launched the studio, so [the development team] wanted to do everything they could to make this new addition a success, hence the long research and meticulous process.”

Unfortunately, this LinkedIn post can no longer be found. Redditors speculated on what these titles could be a remake of, mainly the first and second games from the PS1 era. As this rumor spread, Ubisoft confirmed a remake of a Rayman game in September 2025, but the studio kept its lips sealed.

Rayman Legends Retold Appears at Sony State of Play

When Sony’s June 2026 State of Play arrived, gamers thought they knew who would appear, with Marvel’s Wolverine being the top guess. No one expected Ubisoft’s limbless hero to join the list of premieres.

Rayman Legends Retold is a complete remake of the popular 2013 multiplayer campaign. The game became the go-to Rayman game for its gorgeous artistic visuals, chaotic multiplayer gameplay, and its 2.5D approach to platforming.

Rayman Legends also tested the Wii U’s touchpad and motion controls to utilize as a creative playstyle for the fifth player. Thanks to Ubisoft Montpellier and the franchise’s original creator, Michael Ancel, the game won a NAVGTR Award for Outstanding 2D or Limited 3D Control Design.

So what did Ubisoft add in its remake? According to the developers, Rayman Legends Retold has added new content to the original.

Aside from the improved gameplay and 3D visuals, the remake contains a brand-new story, a sixth realm, four new musical stages, new Cave of Trials challenges, an expanded soundtrack from composers Grant Kirkhope and Christophe Heral, and fully voiced cinematics. The Return of Kung Foot mode from the Definitive Edition of the game will be available for online mode, and will also have improved customizable rules.

Is Rayman Legends Retold a PS5 Exclusive?

Rayman Legends Retold will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Ubisoft Montpellier has not confirmed the title will have cross-play multiplayer.

The game will be sold in three editions. Standard Edition includes the base game and is bundled with its prequel, Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition. Deluxe Digital will include the Retro Costume pack featuring the Classic Rayman, Betilla the Fairy, Retro Hunter, and Electroon Teensie outfits, and the Art Gallery.

Rayman Legends Retold Launch Edition will only be sold in retail. Along with the Standard additions, players will own a physical map of the Glade of Dreams, three lithographs, and a slipcase for the game’s case. The Deluxe Upgrade can be purchased to access the Retro Pack and Art Gallery.
