The New York Knicks became the kings of the NBA, and just a day later, the Carolina Hurricanes followed suit in the NHL. In general, those two teams seemed to be the desired choice of casual or uninvested fans, and it’s rare that the people’s champs are actually crowned.
While that’s certainly an interesting tidbit of the conversation surrounding these two squads, there’s something more interesting at play. The Knicks and Hurricanes have virtually nothing to do with one another, but they just embarked on eerily similar journeys to their respective titles.
Knicks and Hurricanes Win in Weirdly Similar Fashion

Stop me if this sounds familiar. A team that has long struggled to get over the hump in their sport but remains one of its best teams finally won it all, breaking a decades-long drought in the process. This applies to the New York Knicks, who won after 53 long years, and the Carolina Hurricanes, who broke a 20-year drought.
Both teams have been pretty great for years, but they’ve never been the greatest, and they’ve never gotten the lucky breaks that are required to survive a playoff run and emerge victorious. The Hurricanes have the second-most points in the NHL since Rod Brind’Amour was hired, yet they’d never even cracked the Stanley Cup Final in the seven years prior to this season.
The New York Knicks have the fifth-best win percentage in the NBA since 2023. The four teams ahead of them are the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Boston Celtics, three NBA champions and another perennial contender that falls short routinely.
Both the Knicks and Canes got fortunate breaks with their playoff fields. The Knicks avoided the Indiana Pacers, the reigning East champion, because injuries kept them from the playoffs. The Canes avoided the Florida Panthers, the reigning champions in the East (and entire NHL), because of the same thing.
Within the actual playoffs, though, both teams had fortunate setups, too. The Tampa Bay Lightning were on the other side of the Eastern Conference bracket and got eliminated early. The Hurricanes ended up with what amounted to a fairly easy romp through the East.
The Knicks avoided the Boston Celtics (both upset right before a potential matchup with New York) and the Detroit Pistons, the two teams seeded higher than New York. It amounted to a pretty easy run through the East, and the Knicks dominated.
Both teams ended up in their respective championship series and dispatched their opponents in fewer games than many expected. Knicks in five seems impossible even now, considering how good the San Antonio Spurs were and the fact that they had just beaten the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Hurricanes winning in six games seemed utterly impossible after a stunning Game 3 double-overtime loss. They trailed 2-1 in the series and had just seen a shocking four-goal comeback in the third period go to waste on an own goal. Vegas was rightfully favored in the series, but Carolina dispatched them from there.
To top it all off, they had almost identical journeys to the championship. The Knicks swept two opponents, beat another in five, and beat the other in six. The Hurricanes did the same, although the two teams didn’t do it in the same order. The Canes swept the first two series of their Eastern Conference playoffs, while the Knicks swept their last two. Regardless, there is an uncanny amount of similarity between these two teams.
Conclusion
The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Knicks, not long after one another, sit atop the sports world now. The Canes won the Stanley Cup Final over the Vegas Golden Knights, while the Knicks topped the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. They did it in strangely similar fashion, following very similar trajectories up to this point.
