Resident Evil 5, Capcom

Longstanding franchises like Resident Evil, which has been dropping top-line games since 1996, eventually remake their own games. There are multiple reasons for this. Primarily, it’s an easy way to keep the franchise relevant without having to make games from the ground up.

The other reason, which is what attracts gamers to them, is a chance to do one of two things. Those who’ve played the games get to experience them again with new content and modernized controls and graphics. Those who haven’t had the chance to play a game they missed out on finally get that chance.

There have now been nine mainline Resident Evil games, and there have been remakes of the first four to go along with the modern entries. However, despite being well over a decade old, neither Resident Evil 5 nor 6 is expected to get the remake treatment. At least, not any time soon.

Leak Suggests There Will Be No Resident Evil 5 or 6 Remake

At a certain point, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to remake an older game. If it’s not that old or it came out on a semi-modern console, there may be no reason to. It’s not as if a franchise could just remake every single game it has ever released, because that would be rather ridiculous and somewhat endless.

But up to a point, it does make sense to remake old games to bring them to a new audience with updated content and better gameplay. For Capcom, the line of demarcation appears to be Resident Evil 4, more or less. The original Resident Evil 4 came out in 2005, and it’s the last of the mainline entries to receive a remake.

Code: Veronica is getting a remake, but it came out in 2000 and is not a mainline game, so it doesn’t contradict the line that Capcom has drawn. Because, according to leaks, the brand has no interest in remaking the fifth or sixth games. 5 came out in 2009, and 6 came out in 2012.

That’s a while ago, and they would undoubtedly benefit from remakes. Still, that doesn’t seem to be in the plans. There was a theory that Capcom would remake all the games leading up to Requiem, the latest entry from 2026, in an effort to reshape the narrative to clean some things up.

Notable leaker Dusk Golem put an end to this idea. “Capcom has some plan to do a remake line leading up to Requiem and restructure the narrative as part of some long-term plan. This is false, Capcom has no fucking idea right now what they want to do with RE5 and RE6 in remaking them, if they ever even decide to do them (right now they’re not committed to that at all), and they definitely aren’t making these remakes as some idea to restructure the whole series to Requiem,” he wrote in a thread on ResetEra.

A key point the leaker added is that “they’ll only decide what they want to do with an RE5/RE6 Remake if they ever decide to actually do them.” As of now, they have not planned to do that. The leaker did admit that there may come a day when those games are remade, which would make sense, but that day is nowhere near close nor planned whatsoever.

“I think RE5 will probably be remade someday because I think it’s incredibly likely fan demand for it will increase after Veronica, Zero, & RE:1, and eventually Capcom won’t ignore that,” DuskGolem concluded. Capcom hasn’t had a master plan to remake everything, and they’re just taking it as it all comes. But for now, they have no plans to continue remaking the old games.

That may or may not change in the future, but despite the success of every remake they’ve done, the hype for new ones announced, and fan calls for those unannounced, nothing is explicitly on the table yet. For now, just enjoy the ones we do have.
