The retrial of convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has begun with pretrial proceedings on June 29, 2026. The former prominent South Carolina attorney was convicted in 2023 for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul. He maintains his innocence and is being given a second chance at life due to alleged jury tampering in his initial trial.
Retrial Underway
On May 13, 2026, Alex Murdaugh’s murder conviction was overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court, meaning his life sentence was voided. His defense filed an appeal, claiming that the court clerk at his first trial tampered with the jury by urging them to find the defendant guilty.
At Monday’s hearing, they established deadlines to exchange evidence and set a trial schedule. Murdaugh’s defense attorneys requested he be allowed to appear at future proceedings in civilian clothes without shackles. While he awaits trial, he will remain in prison for his 40-year federal sentence for stealing $12 million from his clients.
Murdaugh: Death in the Family
The Murdaugh family murders have become a national true crime sensation, a possible unhealthy fascination. The case has gained more traction throughout the years and eventually developed into a miniseries based on a popular podcast.
“Murdaugh: Death in the Family” streamed on Hulu and Disney+ for 8 episodes, diving deep into the family’s drama, including Alex Murdaugh’s upbringing, his profession, his family and their lives, and his crimes. It follows the unraveling of their family when the youngest son, Paul, is involved in the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, who died in a boating accident.
New Investigation
Defense attorney Dick Harpootlian told Judge Debra McCaslin on Monday that their team needs more time to review evidence that was not examined as thoroughly as needed or was not evaluated adequately during trial.
“We don’t know what we don’t know,” Harpootlian said. He informed the court that OnStar data from Murdaugh’s SUV was not provided until trial was halfway done. “I can’t tell you today that we have everything because I don’t know,” he said.
Defense attorney Jim Griffin piggybacked his colleague, stating they intend to reinvestigate the case, looking for the true assailant who killed Maggie and Paul on the family’s hunting estate in Islandton. Their first course of action is to have Othram, Inc. retest the unknown male DNA that was found under Maggie’s nails.
New Trial Date
McCaslin suggested a new trial date at Monday’s status conference, which was confined to only an hour. The next pretrial hearing is scheduled for August 14, 2026, with a potential trial date of April 5, 2027. However, if the requested DNA analysis takes longer than expected, it could change by “a couple of weeks.“
When they return to court in August, Murdaugh’s attorneys plan to address their change of venue request. They asked for the trial to be moved to where the murders occurred, in Colleton County.
The Murders
On June 7, 2021, Alex Murdaugh called his wife and asked her to meet him at their hunting lodge so they could drive together to visit his father. Evidence at the first trial revealed that Maggie texted a friend, concerned that her husband was up to something, but she proceeded and parked her car.
She walked to the dog kennels where she found her son Paul, who had just sent a Snapchat video to a friend showing his father at the scene of the crime. At around 10 p.m. local time, Murdaugh contacted the police to report that his wife and son had been shot. The two were shot several times in the head and chest with different guns.
Despite the Snapchat video, Murdaugh claimed he was with his mother, who has dementia, when the killings happened. Yet he was supposed to meet his wife at the lodge but did not arrive until after dark, sparking suspicion among investigators.
Conviction and Life Sentence
Murdaugh was convicted and sentenced to consecutive life sentences for the murders. He was also convicted of several financial crimes, including wire fraud, and sentenced to serve another 40 years concurrently.
