The wait for Avatar: Seven Havens is finally over. Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon presented the latest animation trailer for the next anticipated chapter of the series at San Diego Comic-Con. While short, creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have jam-packed lore bits inside. And the The Last Airbender community is theorizing about what this jump to the post-apocalyptic story could entail.
The Spirit and Physical Worlds Are Losing Balance
Paramount’s catalogue blog Sneak Peek has offered plenty of information on Seven Havens’s setting. The timeline is set in the distant future, where the Spirit World and Physical World have intertwined: “Unlike previous Avatars (Aang and Korra), Pavi is on the run from human and spirit enemies. The world she lives in has been devastated by a cataclysmic event.“
Throughout The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, spirits have become an essential part of its worldbuilding. Whether to communicate with past Avatars or search for divine wisdom, Avatar has shown in its previous years how connecting with these otherworldly beings can cause catastrophic events, such as General Zhao disturbing the Moon Spirit Tui in their koi fish form. And for some, they are curious and sometimes helpful beings.
Seven Havens takes place years after the Harmonic Convergence, a crucial event from The Legend of Korra Book Three: Change. The merging of the North and South Pole spirit portals causes a supernatural phenomenon for Non-Benders to gain spiritual energy, allowing them to bend an element. This brought a mass resurgence to Airbenders in Korra’s era.
The main protagonist, Pavi, will be facing the harsh challenges of divided kingdoms as this overwhelming spiritual energy has brought forth a world-ending threat.
The Twin Avatars
Pavi presents a very different story that challenges a dark concept of the Avatar series. Rather than an Avatar who is seen as the world’s savior, the chosen person is now seen as a harbinger of doom. Pavi is destined to be the last hope of restoring balance to the world, but not everyone has welcomed her with open arms.
She is revealed to have a twin who represents the evil side of the Avatar. According to speculated leaks, her name is Nisha. Seven Havens’ trailer preview hints at taking inspiration from the series’s comics and its animated predecessors.
Take the previous Avatars before Aang and Korra, for example. Many have made decisions that either took the life of their greatest threat or did not make rational decisions that would become the catalyst for disrupting the world’s balance. Avatar Kyoshi could be the driving force, for she was tried for murder, separated Chin the Conqueror and his followers from the world, and founded Ba Sing Se’s undercover organization, the Dai Li.
The SDCC’26 trailer has also clarified that Pavi does not have any memory of having an identical sibling. Pavi will be starting as an adaptive Earthbender. She will be accompanied by her airbending mentor Jae and the cat monkey Geet. For Nisha, it’s plausible she learned all four elements (Fire, Earth, Wind, and Air) at an early age. The logic makes sense, considering Pavi is said to be mistaken for her long-lost twin and reacts negatively towards her.
Is Korra Making A Return in Seven Havens?
Out of the reveals, fans are shocked to see who is believed to be Korra. She lays a great foundation for Seven Havens despite her series giving a mixed reception on its storytelling. While Aang represented someone who only resorted to violence to protect the people, Korra struggled to discipline herself, which made her irrational in her decision-making.
In The Legend of Korra, Book Two: Spirits and Book Three: Change, she and her Team Avatar traveled across the Spirit World to reconnect to past Avatars and unlock her new powers to restore peace and balance. She’s identified by her short bobbed hair and her sleeveless Southern Water Tribe garments during the season airings.
At the end of Change, Korra became wheelchaired bound due to the Red Lotus venom injected during the fight against Zaheer. She did manage to recover over time, as Tenzin’s eldest daughter Jinora became the next airbending master and was invited to Varrick’s and Zhu Li’s wedding. She and her girlfriend, Asami, do go into the spirit portal for a vacation, which transitions to the graphic novel series, The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars.
It’s plausible that it will play a major role in Seven Havens’ story and lore. Theorists believe its development would explain why the world has gone to shambles and caused her Avatar State to go haywire. Seven Havens is set to premiere on October 9 exclusively on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.
