Idaho police have identified the suspect in a fatal shooting at a staple fast food joint along the West Coast. A gunman opened fire at an In-N-Out Burger in Idaho on Saturday, August 1, 2026, killing three and injuring seven others before committing suicide.

Shooter Suspect Identified

Officials in Twin Falls, Idaho, said in a press conference on Sunday, August 2, that the suspect involved in the shooting at In-N-Out, who “died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” was identified as 24-year-old Chad Williams. “We are that confident Mr. Williams acted alone,” Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks confirmed, while mentioning the motive is unclear. 

Authorities responded around 2:30 p.m. to multiple 911 calls coming from the chain restaurant located inside a busy shopping center, saying that shots were fired. “Dispatchers could hear screaming and reports of gunshots in the background,” Hicks said.

Three victims of the shooting died, while seven other people were injured, two of them being in critical condition as of Sunday. Authorities are working to notify their families.

There was an armed bystander at the scene, along with an off-duty state police officer who fired shots at the suspect. “We believe their actions drove the suspect from the scene, preventing further casualties,” he added.

Tragedy at In-N-Out Burger

The president of In–N-Out, a popular chain restaurant originating out of California, Lynsi Snyder, said an employee was one of the victims who was killed. “My heart is broken, my chest is heavy, my eyes burn from the tears I’ve shed,” Snyder wrote on Facebook, adding, “We lost one of our beautiful Associates tonight.”

“She was taking care of our most important asset — our Customers, and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn’t value the lives of others or his own,” she continued. “He shot both on our property and off, and ended his life shortly after he took the precious lives of our Associate and Customers, innocent people who never saw it coming.”

In-N-Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick shared a statement with PEOPLE that the corporation is working diligently with law enforcement throughout the investigation. “We are heartbroken. Our prayers go out to our Customers, our Associates, and all of their families,” Warnick said. “We are working with the Twin Falls Police Department to assist in the ongoing investigation.”

Impact on Victims

Several indirect victims spoke about the shooting that occurred on Saturday, including a taxi service in the town, North Star Taxi, which said one of its drivers, Terry Dudley, was injured in the mass shooting.

“Our driver Terry Dudley was the victim of a mass shooting Saturday,” they said in a statement. “Terry was simply charging his Tesla when he was shot twice in the back … He is alive but has a very long road ahead of him.”

A fellow Twin Falls resident, Haley Dodaro, spoke with the Associated Press, saying that she and her mother were having lunch at the In-N-Out that afternoon when they heard shots fired. They were sitting in the drive-thru line waiting on their food when they saw people fleeing into the street and workers escaping the restaurant. 

At first, they believed it was a fire, but a man directing the people who were running shouted that it was a shooter. “So that’s when we knew there was a shooting. People were running out crying and screaming. It was very scary,” she said.

Investigation is Ongoing

The investigation remains active despite the suspect’s death. This particular In-N-Out is located inside a large shopping center with large retailers, a mall, and a movie theatre, meaning there were hundreds of potential witnesses who authorities intend to interview.

“I want to acknowledge the victims, their family, and anybody impacted by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with them, and we recognize the fear and concern that this has caused in our community,” Hicks said. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”
