Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel, MCU

A brand new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, has hit theaters, which makes it a perfect time to rank all the existing Spidey movies. While there is an extended list of Spidey-adjacent movies (the Sony universe), those movies are almost exclusively at the bottom. Only Venom and its sequel outrank even one of the actual Spider-Man movies.

11. Spider-Man 3

The third film in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy features a steep drop-off in quality (probably thanks to Sony). It is ridiculously overstuffed, and it features some horrible villain designs. Venom and the New Goblin both look bad. The brilliance of Sandman is not enough to overshadow that, along with a bad Tobey Maguire performance aided by some admittedly cringe writing.

Score: 2/5

10. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

This movie has some immense flaws, but it also has some incredibly high highs. The Green Goblin subplot is awful, and the character design is maybe the worst design in a Spidey movie. But the suit looks outrageously good, and Andrew Garfield is special here. There are also plenty of perfect character moments that help to offset the uglier aspects.

Score: 3/5

9. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Far From Home is a good movie. We can’t be so beholden to the typical character aspects and settings that we dismiss a movie that changes some of them. So what if he’s in Europe instead of New York for once? That change is fine, and Mysterio is a brilliant villain. The sequences when Mysterio puts Peter Parker through illusions and he must trust his Spider Sense are absolutely among the best in any Spider-Man project.

Score: 4/5

8. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Homecoming is also a good movie. It is smart to distance the franchise from the origin story we’ve all seen plenty of times. We don’t need to see Uncle Ben die or Peter get bitten for a third time. Adding in Iron Man is a double-edged sword because their dynamic is good, but it does change a big aspect of the character. Regardless, Vulture is amazing, and the reveal that he’s Liz’s dad is a top MCU moment.

Score: 4/5

7. Spider-Man

There are some things that hold this movie back. Everyone looks way too old for their characters. The Spidey suit is not great, featuring a harsh and angular design that doesn’t come off very heroic. Still, it’s got great set designs, a really solid story, and a historic villain performance from Willem Dafoe. His Green Goblin remains near the top of all villain performances in any movie, let alone a Spider-Man movie.

Score: 4/5

6. The Amazing Spider-Man

Yes, this is a hot take. It doesn’t get a ton of points for originality, but The Amazing Spider-Man does a lot of improving on the formula. Uncle Ben’s death is more or less as impactful, but the scenes leading up to it are better here. Andrew Garfield acts circles around Tobey Maguire. Sally Field remains the definitive version of Aunt May. The suit could be better, and Lizard is slightly underwhelming, but there’s a lot going for it.

Score: 4/5

5. Spider-Man 2

People believe Sam Raimi’s sequel is the best superhero movie ever. It’s not, but it is certainly great. Doc Ock is a fantastic villain anchored by a great Alfred Molina performance. This is also Tobey Maguire’s best outing, and it has the most relatable plot of probably any Spider-Man movie. It features perhaps the best characterization of New York, and there are some excellent horror moments showing off Raimi’s roots.

Score: 4.5/5

4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Into the Spider-Verse totally changed the game for this character. Getting Miles Morales more into the mainstream was a stroke of genius, and he is a phenomenal character. The animation is exceptional, and the soundtrack is special. It may be marketed more towards kids, but it carries a powerful message for them and adults: Anyone can wear the mask.

Score: 5/5

3. Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The latest entry, Brand New Day, finds itself really high up on the list. It features the second-best suit ever seen in live action. Tom Holland delivers his best and most assured performance as Peter Parker. It hits all the emotional beats, exploring key parts of the character. It also features a ton of subtle, clever nods to other Spidey media. It looks fantastic after filming on location, and it’s on its way to a historic box office yield.

Score: 5/5

2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Everything said about Into the Spider-Verse applies to Across the Spider-Verse, but even more. The soundtrack, helmed by Metro Boomin, is even better. Impossibly, the animation is even better, too. It ups the stakes from the first movie in real, meaningful ways, and it introduces several awesome characters from the spider canon. There is a little hinging on this movie paying off in Beyond, but assuming it lands, this will remain an elite part one of a part two.

1. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Does this movie have some flaws? Yes. The fact that they had to film during COVID-19 is evident with a lackluster green-screen background. Tom Holland’s suits in the movie are just average. It has some clear pauses built in for audience applause that don’t hold up at home. And yet, it’s perfect. I will forever be chasing the feeling I had walking out of the theater in December 2021. They balanced the three Spider-Men so well, giving each of them a meaningful arc that elevates the two alternate versions from cameos to real, necessary, and layered side characters.
