Avengers: Doomsday is mere months away now, and star David Harbour (Red Guardian from Black Widow and Thunderbolts) is kickstarting some of the press with a shocking revelation. In speaking with Variety on a, pun intend, variety of film topics, the actor revealed a massive line straight from the script of the upcoming MCU film.

David Harbour Confirms Character Twist in Avengers: Doomsday

David Harbour will return in Avengers: Doomsday, along with 100 other characters. During the course of the film, it is likely that every single one will interact with (or be killed by) Robert Downey Jr.’s version of Doctor Doom, the film’s big bad. Red Guardian is one of those characters.

Variety’s Clayton Davis pressed Harbour for anything, even a line totally out of context. Well, Harbour provided, and even without context, it is immediately clear what it’s referring to. “You … are Tony Stark,” he said in his Russian accent while pointing. It is honestly a little shocking that he revealed something that seems immensely significant.

David Harbour could’ve provided anything, but he referenced a character. Not only that, but he referenced a character who is technically not even in the film. Tony Stark is dead in the MCU, and until now, there have been no variants of the character in the live-action MCU.

This all but guarantees (Harbour could just be trolling) that the connection between Doctor Doom and Tony Stark will be explored. Everyone wondered whether or not the fact that he looks like Stark would matter, and it appears that it will. There were debates over how unmasked Victor Von Doom should be, and it seems he will at least have his face revealed enough for Red Guardian to notice.

Harbour’s tidbit also lends credence to the multiple Doom theories. Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed that it seems like Doctor Doom’s eyes are stark green (as in the comics) in some scenes, and his eyes appear to be blue, like Robert Downey Jr.’s, in others. Whether it’s a trick of the lighting or misdirection remains to be seen, but the debate should take on a new life and a different shape with David Harbour’s revelation.

Doom has never been connected to Stark in the comics, so this is potentially a massive change for the MCU. Downey is an excellent, Oscar-winning actor whom people love, so it wouldn’t have been a crazy ploy to use his name recognition but keep him behind the mask at all times. Doom’s face is scarred, though, so staying masked is in keeping with classic characterization.

However, it is far more interesting to use Downey again with some reason for it in-universe. It’s much more fascinating to know that the MCU’s most important hero is directly tied to its biggest villain yet, whether or not we can immediately understand why. Evidently, that’s going to be revealed, which makes Avengers: Doomsday a lot more interesting.

There are obviously a lot of things happening in the movie, and each one of them could go horribly wrong. Balancing the FOX X-Men, Deadpool, and a bunch of the MCU’s remaining heroes with Doctor Doom’s origin, the incursions, and whatever else is being hidden for now (like potential alternate Spider-Men) is a lot. Now, they’re adding a connection to Tony Stark into it.

It’s already a long movie, and Harbour’s comments seem to suggest something important that will take up some of the runtime, only making Doomsday come off as even more ambitious, grand, and risky. We will all be there in the theater to find out what is going to happen, but interest continues to grow even now with every small revelation.
