Look to the sky and hold onto your utility belts, Batfans. This month, we celebrate the Caped Crusader. In the darkness of night, evildoers are shaking in their boots… because Batman Day is coming. Batfans will have a lot to be happy about this year…

I am an avid fan and collector of many and any things related to the Cowled Crimefighter. I have toys, comics, artwork, DVDs, video games, masks, Batmobiles, a Batman teddy bear that my beloved Jennie Bear gave me for Valentine’s Day, and even a Batman record player. Every day is Batman Day in my house.

What is Batman Day…?

Batman celebrated his 75th Anniversary on July 23, 2014. To celebrate the occasion, DC Comics held the inaugural Batman Day to align with San Diego Comic-Con. DC released special-edition reprints of the World’s Greatest Detective’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27 to fans in attendance.

After such a positive fan reaction, DC decided to capitalize on the success of the first Batman Day. Every year, since 2015, DC Comics has celebrated the Masked Manhunter on the third or fourth Saturday in September. The decision to move the event back two months allowed retailers and local comic book shops to host their own celebrations without having to compete with summer comic conventions.

In 2019, Gotham’s Guardian turned 80. He looks pretty good for his age… To recognize the Dark Knight, cities across the world, including Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, simultaneously shone Bat-Signals in the night sky. The signals represented the cultural impact the vigilante has not only in Gotham City but across the globe.

After numerous movies, television series, spinoffs, toys, and video games, Batman became the first superhero to receive his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Though not on the official Batman Day, he received his star on September 26, 2024, five days after the hooded hero’s holiday.

2026 Batman Day…

This year’s Batman Day takes place on Saturday, September 19th, with the theme “Rule the Night.” The celebration focuses on the intersection of DC Comics’ classic universe and the new Absolute Universe. Comic book stores across the globe will share in the Bat-festivities.

The centerpiece of this year is a special one-shot comic book titled “Batman of Two Worlds #1” which has a $2.99 price tag. The comic is written by Scott Snyder and features two different stories that put both Earth-0 Dark Knight and the Absolute Batman Universe on full display. The stories showcase what “theft” and “justice” look like in each universe’s Gotham City.

Local comic shops will hold several exclusive promotions and giveaways… Some participating stores will hand out free paper masks drawn by Ryan Sook, in varying styles of mainline Batman, Hush, Absolute Batman, and The Dark Knight Returns. DC is also releasing five major premium hardcovers. Featured will be Batman Vol. 1: Daylight, which has a special cover tribute to Absolute Batman #1. Also available: a special Batman ’89 edition with a digital copy of the movie and the deluxe version of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham.

DC Mobile will be releasing several Bat-titles for fans to read for free on the DC Universe platform. Among these free titles are Absolute Batman #1-3 and the entire Batman: Wayne Family Adventures series. DC Universe Online is also currently hosting an active in-game event through September 21, giving players daily open-world Gotham missions, Arkham Asylum Alerts, and opportunities to earn limited-time “Rule the Night” rewards.

Also taking place on this special weekend are the theatrical re-releases of my personal favorite Batflick, Batman (1989), the super fun The Lego Batman Movie, and the animated classic, which some have called the best Batman movie, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm… which rightfully so, because it is pretty awesome. Check your local movie theaters for showtimes. There’s nothing like seeing the caped crusader on the big screen. If you can’t make it to the theater, HBO Max has a great selection of Bat-titles, including the ones I just listed.

Internationally, big cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo, Milan, Berlin, and Mexico City will hold special celebrations with their own unique events and pop-up screenings. I have also heard rumors that the beacon call of the real Bat-Signal will illuminate the night sky.

Go Batty and Celebrate…

If you want to celebrate my favorite vigilante superhero with me but don’t have the time, ask yourself… “What would Nick do?” Well, at minimum, I’d throw on my favorite Bat T-shirt, kick back, and find my favorite Batman movie or show and enjoy… However you choose to celebrate is up to you, but don’t be a Joker and miss out on the opportunity to have a little fun.

While Batman Day isn’t an official holiday, I am currently petitioning our President to make it one. It would be his greatest accomplishment as Commander in Chief. Maybe he can name a lake after him or something… Lake Batman has a nice ring to it. Don’t you think? While presidents are just temporary, Batman is FOREVER.
