Well, that was fast. The Carolina Panthers have fired their defensive coordinator, Ejiro Evero, following their loss last night. The team suffered their 4th loss of the year and felt that a change needed to be made on the defensive side of the ball. There isn’t a single needle-moving action the Panthers can make, so firing their DC is the route they chose.
Panthers Fire Evero

Evero has been the Panthers’ defensive coordinator since 2023. Over the four years he has been with the team, the best his defense has ranked, scoring-wise, was last season, when it ranked 15th. Outside of that, they have ranked 29th, 32nd, and 27th this year. After entering the 2026 campaign with high expectations and acquiring a plethora of talent this offseason, the defense hasn’t lived up to the hype.
Was This Needed?
I think that it was time to move on. We have already gone through where the defense ranked during his tenure. However, the tipping point for me is their inability to get off the field on 3rd down. During his tenure, they ranked 15th (38%), 32nd (50.2%), 31st (47.1%), and 27th (46.4%) this year. Maybe Carolina needs a new scheme to take control of the NFC South.
Final Thoughts
The Panthers sit on top of the division, but with a 3-4 record and already playing their game this week, they will most likely find themselves in 3rd place when the NFL weekend is over. There is still plenty of season left to make up the ground they have lost if their defense is serviceable. What was your reaction when the news broke?
