With so much false and outrageous MAGA talk around these days, perhaps you missed the story of Pennsylvania Representative Dan Meuser’s reaction to the intentional fire set at Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence last weekend. You have to hang closely with me on this one as it suspends all logic.

I have never heard of Rep. Meuser before today, but I don’t think that it’s out of reach to say that views like this are why the country is so divided. Even more disturbing is that MAGA nation has mostly remained silent about the incident at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence while they are outraged by much smaller actions and events directed at President Trump’s supporters.

Fire at the Governor’s Residence

Around 2 am last Sunday morning, a fire was set at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence of Josh Shapiro and his family. The governor and his family thankfully left the house and were not harmed. Later that morning, Cody Balmer, 38 turned himself into police custody. Balmer has been charged with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, as well as other crimes.

When asked why he committed the crime, Balmer told police he hated Shapiro and that he was “a monster who was doing serious, serious harm.” He went on to say that he was aware that the governor and his family were home when he entered the house. When they asked what he would have done if confronted by Shapiro, he replied. “That he would have beaten him with his hammer.”

The fire was set on the night that the governor (who is Jewish) and his family were celebrating Passover. Balmer told 911 operators he “will not take part in his (Shapiro’s) plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people.”

Meuser’s Comments

Sush an action perpetrated against anyone and their family should elicit statements of concern and support for the damaged party. But Rep, Meuser apparently views these things a little differently. While he explained that our hearts go out to Shapiro and his family, his major point of emphasis was this.

“The left’s got to look in the mirror here. They gotta tone it down too. I mean, every action Josh Shapiro has taken so far against the president has either been a lawsuit or a falsehood.”

Democrats responded harshly to Meuser’s comments, Governor Shapiro himself said.

“ I’ve said for years leaders have a responsibility to speak and act with moral clarity. It would appear that the congressman failed to measure up to that.”

Trump and Supporters Show Little Compassion

Much like Meuser, the president and his supporters threw little compassion Shapiro’s way. President Trump merely said that the attacker was a “whack job” and “not a fan of Trump.” And while Attorney General Pam Bondi initially showed concern for the Shapiro family, she refused to call it an act of “domestic terrorism” unlike the protest at Tesla dealerships which drew this response from her.

“I’ve made it clear: If you take part in the wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla properties, we will find you, arrest you, and put you behind bars.”

FBI Director Kash Patel to his credit did extend his concern to the governor and his family.

Further Investigation

Democratic Minority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer has called on Bondi and the Justice Department to investigate the arson attack at the governor’s residence as a hate crime. Bondi has only said that what happened to the Shapiro family at their residence was horrific and that the perpetrator should be put behind bars. But she stopped short of calling the incident an act of “domestic terrorism” or commit to opening a separate federal case against the suspect. She indicated her department is still investigating the matter.

Rep. Meuser has remained conspicuously quiet after his initial remarks.
