Today, April 23, 2025, Jason Citron announced that he will be stepping down as CEO from the social media platform, Discord. This came as a sudden shock, and various other social media platforms ignited as the news broke. Citron released a memo to the public, making it clear that while he will no longer will be the CEO of the company, he will still work on the Board of Directors and as the Advisor to the new CEO.
Who Will Fill Jason Citron’s Shoes?
The former Activision Blizzard Vice Chairman Humam Sakhnini will be stepping into Citron’s previous role as CEO. While there seems to be no ill will from Citron towards Sakhnini, it is mad pretty clear that the two have a deep history of growth and support for each other, and growth overall. Sakhnini has overseen some of the bigger known names in the gaming community, such as World of Warcraft and Call of Duty. He is even tied to the growth of the mobile game Candy Crush.
While these are some of the more publicly known achievements, Sakhnini has many other accomplishments and years of experience. As a matter of fact, he brings over 15 years of experience with him as he transitions into his new role as CEO for Discord.
What is the Future for Discord?
Both Citron and Sakhnini are “fundamentally aligned“, according to Citron’s memo, which he released today. Both of the two men have a deep history in gaming and tech, and seem passionate about the gaming-based social platform’s growth and success. Jason Citron expresses not only many positive emotions in his statement about his decision, and Sakhnini’s official first day will be Monday, April 28, 2025.
