Recall, sausage, food recall

A recall that involves over 100 pounds of ready-to-eat sausage has been announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The brand, Bourgeois Smokehouse, issued a recall to the public that stated the smoked andouille sausage may be contaminated with Listeria. The recalled sausage was sold at butcher counters at Rouses Market locations in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. FSIS were performing routine tests when the sausage tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled sausage was produced May 12 and then was available for purchase the next day, May 13.

Identifying the Recalled Product

The sausage involved was individually weighed and packaged. They would also have been labeled at the butcher counter, so the labels may vary and it will not have a USDA mark of inspection. Even if purchased at the mentioned market and not directly at the butcher counter, do not consume this product. As with any recall, you can ask of a replacement or refund from the store you purchased the item(s) from.

Illness Caused By Consumption

Listeria monocytogenes can cause the infection listeriosis, which is serious and sometimes can be fatal. While an infection can be more serious for certain individuals or groups, anyone can get listeriosis. The symptoms include but are not limited to fever, muscle aches, convulsions, gastrointestinal issues, and more. In pregnant women this infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature births, and life-threatening infections for newborn babies.

If you think you are experiencing symptoms or have any questions about listeriosis, you should contact your healthcare provider or hospital. For questions regarding the recall, you can contact Bourgeois Smokehouse directly at 985-447-1604. No one has reported illness at this time.
