On September 13, 2022, CD Projekt Red dove deeper into the world of hit sci-fi shooter RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. The team developed an anime prequel called Cyberpunk Edgerunners alongside Gurren Lagann’s Studio Trigger and board game designer Mike Pondsmith. Three years after the anime’s release, Studio Trigger revealed at LA Anime Expo 2025 that the sequel is now in production.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 1 Summary
Cyberpunk Edgerunners follows the story of David Martinez, a misfortunate high schooler in Night City. After installing James Norris’ Sandevistan, the chipware led him into a dangerous path of an edgerunner. His endless chase leads him to survive alongside Lucy Kushinada. Season 1’s events led to an emotional yet heart-racing ending as David confronts Arasaka Corporation.

Faraday, and his partner Kiwi, attempted to expose Lucy’s past as a netrunner for the Arasaka Corporation. She shielded David from the truth by erasing their confidential files to retrieve the Sandevistan. The hidden betrayal strained their relationship and cost the lives of their crew leaders, Maine and Dorio. During the Araska convoy heist, David encountered a gang associated with Militech. He upgraded to the tech manufacturer’s latest cyber exoskeleton to save Becca and Falco. However, the enhancement affected his neural faculties.
The crew learned Faraday hired Militech to trick David into wearing the exoskeleton for Arasaka’s research. Now knowing he held Lucy hostage, the edgerunner tracks him down. He, Becca, and Falco headed straight for Arasaka Tower. When David reached the top, Faraday lured him into an ambush resulting in a soldier massacre. He tried to finish him off with a single bullet, only for Adam Smasher to intercept the shot. He escorts Lucy to Becca and Falco before his final battle of the season.
She begged for his friends to turn back for David. They refused to and apologized in his stead for not taking her to the moon together. David soon let’s go to suppress the Sandevistan, linking with Arasaka’s exoskeleton, and is killed by Adam’s headshot. The final scene fast-forwards to Lucy taking a shuttle tour to the moon, reminiscing about her lover in their braindance.
What’s in Store For Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2?
On July 4, 2025, Cyberpunk Edgerunners stealthily announced the mini-series’ sequel during the LA Anime Expo week. ARC System Works had a planned showcase for Lucy’s Guilty Gear Strive fighter update. So far, they have released official development sketches on her moveset. The artwork was later posted on their Bluesky account.
CD Projekt Red then revealed a teaser poster and trailer for Cyberpunk Edgerunners’ new chapter on July 5. Mini-series director Hiroyuki Imaishi passes the role to Kai Ikarashi, who previously directed Cyberpunk Edgerunners Episode 6, “Girl on Fire”. The trailer paid a Season 1 tribute to David Martinez. The subtitles read, “David’s dead, but Night City lives on.”
The poster is drawn by Studio Trigger’s Ichigo Kanno (Darling in the Franxx, BNA: Brand New Animal). Where David’s chapter was full of bright pink and yellow hues, Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 shifts to shades of red, white, and black. Showrunner Bartosz Sztybor explains the anime’s new direction on Anime Expo’s Director’s Voice:
“David may be gone, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City. To have Studio Trigger working alongside CD Projekt Red again introduces us to a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike we have done before.” He then hinted his vision to the show’s fans, “I just wanted to make the world sad…when people are sad, I’m a bit happy. […] It will also be darker, more bloody, and more raw.”
Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 will follow its predecessor’s footsteps to tell its grim tale in 10 episodes. The trailer and poster highlight that the new protagonist will be either a vlogger or a documentarian. They can be seen holding a video camera before revealing their face. We await for CD Projekt Red to reveal a release date.
