National Sunflower Day, sunflowers, national holiday

I bet you didn’t even know there was a National Sunflower Day! Well, now you do! Today is this year’s annual National Sunflower Day, and unlike most holidays, it does not have a set date. Instead, it is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in August. The idea was introduced a few years ago, back in 2022, and then became official in 2023. Today is a day to celebrate not only the flower itself, but also to spread joy and happiness. Many consider the sunflower to be the “happiest flower” in the world.

Who Came Up With National Sunflower Day?

Who came up with the idea of having a National Sunflower Day, you might ask? Well, both the National Sunflower Association (NSA) and North Dakota Tourism brought up the idea back in 2022. The following year, on the first Saturday in August of 2023, this holiday became official! The NSA is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching, educating, and supporting the sunflower and its impact on the agricultural industry. From providing resources to farmers, funding, and assisting with research on sunflower varieties, to fostering the growth and sustainability of the sunflower industry, the NSA offers numerous resources.

The North Dakota Tourism Division offers resources to those traveling to or living in the state of North Dakota, but of a different kind. They help many find various areas to travel to and experience, promote local plays and events, and so much more! North Dakota is known for its natural beauty, so it only makes sense that they partnered up with the NSA a few years ago to create this floral-based holiday!
