Indianapolis Colts, NFL, Anthony Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts have been an intriguing team since drafting Anthony Richardson back in 2023. On paper, this is a franchise that is riddled with talent, but for some reason, they haven’t been able to put it together. One of their saving graces is their division. Competing in the AFC South can be a blessing. With the Colts having one of the more interesting offseasons in the NFL, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next season. Let’s dive into their offseason moves!

Colts’ 2024-2025 Season Recap

The Indianapolis Colts are coming off an up-and-down season. A season full of potential and heartbreak. When your starting QB is someone as raw as Anthony Richardson, the sky is the limit; however, the floor can be really low as well. Last year, the Colts went 8-9 and finished 2nd in the AFC South. How did they improve their roster to make a run at an AFC South title?

Offseason Additions

In free agency, Indy made a couple of splash moves to a defense that was ranked 24th in points allowed per game, 26th in passing yards allowed per game, and 24th in rushing yards allowed per game. They signed CB Charvarious Ward and S Camryn Bynum, who should improve a secondary that has been hit or miss over the past two seasons. As for the offensive side of the ball, the Colts brought in Daniel Jones to compete for the starting QB position and Khalil Herbert, who will take a bit of the load off star running back Jonathan Taylor.

Let’s turn to the draft. With the 8th pick in the NFL Draft, the Colts selected talented tight end Tyler Warren out of Penn State. Warren is one of the more versatile players coming out in this year’s draft. He should make an immediate impact for whoever’s the starting QB. In the second and third rounds, Indy selected defensive end JT Tuimoloau and cornerback Justin Walley. These additions, to an already talented roster, should slide Indy back into contention for the AFC South.

Offseason Losses

Usually, when a team brings in an abundance of talent, it means they lost a plethora of it. The few key losses to the Colts were Will Fries and Ryan Kelly. Those two were key contributors to an offensive line that was riddled with injuries last season. This franchise also lost talented kicker Matt Gay and running back Trey Sermon to free agency. However, you could say the Colts brought in more talent than they lost.

Opinions on Offseason Transactions

I believe the moves the Colts have made this offseason will make or break their young quarterback, Anthony Richardson. He is entering his third season and has yet to live up to the 4th overall pick. However, he has plenty of talent around him and a head coach who can scheme him easy completions. I love the addition of Warren to give Richardson a large target to throw to.

From an overall roster standpoint, Indy has a good enough roster to contend in this lackluster division. The AFC South doesn’t have a dominant team in it, the Houston Texans or the Jacksonville Jaguars. This team was a few passes away from winning the division with a backup quarterback. This could easily be a 10-win team, but they could also be a 5-6 win team. However, that’s a story for a different day.

Final Thoughts

I love the additions of the team, especially their draft class. I believe getting Warren with the 8th pick is a steal and has the potential to be in the offensive rookie of the year race. With Richardson only being 23, the sky is the limit for him. That’s what I want to see next season. He makes throws that only 2-3 QBs can make, but he’ll miss easy throws that’ll make Colts fans gouge their eyes out.
