NFL, Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, AFC West

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the team of the late 2010s and the early 2020s. Last year was a season of heartbreak. Despite making the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season, they failed to do what no team has done before: win three straight championships. After losing to the Eagles, it was time to retool the team. They made plenty of moves that should have them right back in contention for another Lombardi trophy. Let’s dive into the moves the reigning AFC winners made!

Chiefs’ 2025 Season Recap

The Kansas City Chiefs had a great regular season. This team was the definition of “just keep winning.” Finishing the year 15-1 before losing the last game of the season, where they were resting starters. They would go on to make Super Bowl 59 against the Philadelphia Eagles but were defeated 40-22. When your offense gets pushed around as theirs did, it’s time for changes.

Offseason Additions

The biggest reason why the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl was their offensive line. They made it a priority to bring in talent. KC signed OT Jaylon Moore in free agency and drafted OT Josh Simmons. If Simmons were healthy entering the draft, he would have been the top offensive lineman taken. These moves should improve the Chiefs’ ability to keep Patrick Mahomes upright.

Defensively, they focused on the interior of their defensive line by signing defensive tackle Jerry Tillery and drafting another tackle, Omarr Norman-Lott and defensive end Ashton Gillotte. With Chris Jones getting older, it’s essential to take the load off his plate by bringing in a serviceable rotational lineman. In terms of DBs, they signed talented cornerback Kristian Fulton, who was drafted in the second round back in the 2020 draft.

Offseason Departures

Concerning the talent they lost, KC lost an abundance of it. On the offensive side of the ball, let’s start with a confusing move. They traded away Joe Thuney, a very talented guard. Maybe it was a situation where it’s best to trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late. However, it’s still a massive loss for the Chiefs’ offensive line. The team also lost three wide receivers: DeAndre Hopkins to the Ravens, Justin Watson to the Texans, and Mecole Hardman to the Packers. Despite the group not being top-tier talent, they will be missed in KC.

Let’s turn to the defensive losses. They lost longtime Chief safety Justin Reid to the Saints in free agency. He was a locker room leader and one of the best players on the defense. Defensive linemen Tershawn Wharton and Derrick Nnadi also left during free agency. From a team that has had one of the best defenses in the NFL over the past three seasons, it’ll be interesting to see how they bounce back. Can their defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, get his unit to return to their top 10 form?

Opinions on Chiefs’ Offseason

This is an interesting offseason to gauge. On one hand, they lost a plethora of talent, but on the other hand, I love the talent they brought in on the offensive line. I think drafting Simmons 32nd overall is one of the steals of the draft. As previously mentioned, if he were healthy entering the draft, he was the top tackle on many analysts’ boards.

Final Thoughts

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the premier organization in recent memory. The only question I have is if Mahomes can return to his gunslinging ways. We all remember when he broke onto the scene, throwing for 5,000 yards and 50 TDs. By all accounts, until someone beats them before the AFC Championship game, they are the class of the AFC.
