CJ Stroud, NFL, Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are coming off a tough end to their season. For a team and franchise that had a promising rookie season under CJ Stroud and Demico Ryans, last season was up and down. This team suffered a heartbreaking injury to one of its best young players, and its campaign ended the same way it did last year. This offseason was a little interesting, so let’s jump into it!

Houston Texans’ 2024-2025 Season Recap

After a promising season under Demico Ryans and rookie QB CJ Stroud, last year was a little demoralizing. The Texans’ defense was good, but it seemed as if Stroud was down across the board. He was worse in passing yards, TDs, more interceptions, and a worse QBR (Quarterback Rating). They finished with a 10-7 record for the second consecutive year, but this team’s injuries limited their postseason success.

Offseason Departures

This offseason was met with one of the more interesting moves a contending team can make. They traded their best offensive lineman, Laremy Tunsil, to the Washington Commanders. When you have an offensive tackle as talented as he is, you grab him with both hands and never let go, haha. The Texans also released offensive guard Shaq Mason and traded away Kenyon Green. Mason and Green played 84.28% and 52.66% of the offensive snaps.

Let’s move to offensive playmakers. Stefon Diggs was lost in free agency to the New England Patriots after a promising few games with the team. Diggs suffered a season-ending injury after just eight games, while Robert Woods signed with the Steelers. Two solid pass catchers for a team that could use help more than ever, with Tank Dell likely being out for the season.

Offseason Aquisitions

Despite their losses, the Texans brought in a plethora of talent. They acquired CJ Gardner-Johnson in the Green trade. Something also happened that usually doesn’t, a trade within the division. Houston traded with the Jacksonville Jaguars and acquired WR Christian Kirk to address their receiver shortage this season. To bolster the offensive line, they picked up Cam Robinson and Trent Brown as free agents, as well as Laken Tomlinson and Ed Ingram. To take some of the load off Joe Mixon, who had an excellent campaign last year, Houston signed Nick Chubb in the open market. If Chubb can be 75% of what he was with the Browns, he could be a great addition to this team.

Opinions on the Texans’ Offseason

Considering one of their core players, Tank Dell, will likely miss the season, this is a “makeshift” year. I love the talent this team brought in. Kirk will be great alongside Nico Collins, and Gardner-Johnson can bring the attitude and swag that the Texans’ defense plays with. The biggest question about the moves this team made is whether its offensive line will improve from last season. Stroud was the 5th most sacks QB per game at 3.1. That is up from when he was 16th in his rookie season at 2.5 sacks taken per game.

Final Thoughts

Considering their trades, losses, and signings, the Texans have brought in plenty of talent that should counteract the talent they lost. Before the season starts or delving deep into the schedule, I would grade their offense a B+. Houston brought in plenty that should help them contend with a very winnable AFC South.
