Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will have the eyes of the football world on him today as he makes his 2025 debut in an exhibition game against the Houston Texans at U.S. Bank Stadium. McCarthy missed all of last season with a torn meniscus suffered in an exhibition match against the Las Vegas Raiders. That, coupled with the Vikings’ jettisoning their 2024 Pro-Bowl quarterback Sam Darnold, ratchets up the intensity surrounding the Michigan alum’s appearance today.

In fairness to McCarthy, since it is the first exhibition game of the season, his stint today will be a limited one, possibly as short as 8-10 plays. But given the fanfare surrounding his choice as Minnesota’s number one draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and the spotlight nature of his up-and-down pro career so far, the cameras will be focused squarely on him today.

The Highs and Lows of McCarthy’s Rise to QB1

As mentioned, McCarthy was the Vikings’ first selection in last year’s NFL Draft. He was brought in to be Minnesota’s quarterback of the future. And despite the short memory of many people, the plan was always to deploy Sam Darnold as the number one quarterback in 2025, thus giving J.J. time to mature and learn the system.

And barring an injury to Darnold, this was regarded as a smart plan given Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell’s reputation as an astute developer of young signal callers. However, the wheels partially fell off as McCarthy suffered his early-season injury.

Fortunately for Minnesota, Darnold went on to have a spectacular 2025 campaign, albeit with a sharp decline in productivity in the final two games of his tenure with the team. Once the team was assured that McCarthy had recovered fully from the meniscus injury, he was promoted to the number one quarterback position.

Setting the Stage and the View So Far

To aid McCarthy’s development, the Vikings made some offseason additions to bolster both their offense and defense. On offense, the most significant additions were the acquisitions of Indianapolis Colts Ryan Kelly and Will Fries as upgrades to the center and right guard positions. And with their number one pick in this year’s draft, they chose Ohio State offensive lineman Donovan Jackson to step into the starting left tackle job. Additionally, the underrated running back Jordan Mason was signed to solidify the running attack.

Add all of this to the returning marquee talent on the team’s offense, like receivers Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, tight end T.J. Hockenson, and running back Aaron Jones, and you have all of the ingredients for an explosive Minnesota offense. And with Vikings’ defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ ball-hawking squad, there will be additional opportunities to get the ball back in McCarthy’s hands.

The reports so far on McCarthy’s performance in training camp have been mixed. He has demonstrated a strong arm and the cerebral agility to execute the plays correctly. But the entire Vikings offense has been stymied by the aggressiveness of Flores’ defense. This has only raised the expectations for the young quarterback’s performance today.

Realistic Expectations for J.J. McCarthy Today

With such a small sample size today, there could be a tendency to overrate or underrate McCarthy’s performance today. Unless there is a major breakdown or some colossal breakthrough plays, his development remains a work in progress. Some of the things that I would like to see from J.J. today include:

• Execute the plays smoothly and demonstrate his command of the playbook.
• Sharp, crisp passing mechanics.
• Coolness in the pocket.
• Indication of synchronization with receivers and running backs.
• Recognition of his status as the leader of the offense.

I can’t wait for the fun to begin today.
