The Miami Dolphins have had an interesting past few seasons. From being one of the most electric offenses in recent memory to one of the worst situations any team can be in. It is tough to contend in a division where you are the only warm-weather team in a division full of cold. A wishful season all starts with a good offseason. Let’s dolphin dive straight into the moves Miami made!
Miami Dolphins 2024-2025 Season Recap
Going into last season, the Dolphins were coming off a dreadful playoff performance. After being the best offense all season, they were dismantled by the Kansas City Chiefs 26-9. In the 2024 season, they started with a nice win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then in week two, the you know what hit the fan. Their starting QB, Tua Tagovailoa, suffered one of the worst concussions in recent memory, an injury that kept him sidelined for a month. The season unfolded to an 8-9 record, and the team missed the playoffs for the first time since Mike McDaniel became the head coach. Let’s jump into their offseason moves.
Offseason Losses
This team lost a ton of talent over the past few months. On the defensive end, they lost Jevon Holland and Anthony Walker Jr. to free agency. Miami also traded away Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers. We will get into what they gained in the trade. For a team that was so riddled with talent just three seasons ago, the wheels are falling off the wagon.
On offense, the Dolphins lost Raheem Mostert, a running back who led the NFL in touchdowns (21) just two seasons ago. In the Ramsey deal, Miami also sent Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh. Smith had a career year with the Dolphins last year, with 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. Braxton Berrios also signed with the Houston Texans in free agency. He wasn’t a household name, but a reliable pass catcher for Miami.
Offseason Additions
With all the talent that left Miami, they brought in some studs, especially in the trenches. With their first three selections in the NFL Draft, they took linemen on both sides, offensive and defensive. With their first pick, the Dolphins selected a talented DT out of Michigan, Kenneth Grant. Let’s turn to their offensive line. South Beach brought in OGs James Daniels and Jonah Savaiinaea to keep their franchise QB upright this upcoming season. Most NFL games are won at the line of scrimmage. He who controls that, controls the game.
Opinions on Miami’s Offseason
This team is on a slow decline to its inevitable end. When you trade away an aging star and your leading receiver from last season, you can’t say this is a team looking to contend. It’s simple: when Tua plays, Miami’s offense can overcome its lack of a complete roster. However, when he misses time, it looks like a JV team—a few good pieces and nothing else. I love the additions they made in the draft, especially Grant. If the Dolphins and Tua can stay healthy, they’ll be interesting, but their QB has only played in 17 games in a season once in his career, excluding his rookie season.
Final Thoughts
With an offseason marked by controversy, this franchise has done its best to turn the stigma of being a “soft team” around and be a united front. To sum up their offseason, this was as basic an offseason as I can remember—just an average offseason of shipping off talent and bringing other players in. With the additions on both sides of the line, the Dolphins could steer the ship around. They will be an interesting team to monitor, nonetheless.
