Macarena Los Del Rio

Before the “Wobble” and the “Cupid Shuffle” were telling people how to dance, two amigos from Spain had people around the world throwing out their arms and moving their hips. The “Macarena” exploded on the scene like a baby with diarrhea. Los Del Rio had one of the biggest hits in the 1990s, and their massive classic was released thirty years ago. One of the biggest line dance songs of all time taught us how to put each arm out, put them on our head, shoulders, shake our hips, jump around, and do it all over again!

The Macarena’s Cultural Impact

Towards the end of 1995 into ’96, one couldn’t go to a bar, club, a wedding, or even a sporting event without hearing that catchy beat. The “Macarena” was EVERYWHERE! The song sat on top of the Billboard Charts for a then record-breaking sixty weeks in a row! If that doesn’t prove how massive this song was, the New York Yankees led the charge for the largest mass performance of fifty thousand people shaking their hips at once.

In 2002, VH1, on the tail end of the television network that actually showed music videos, named the hit from Los Del Rio as the greatest one-hit wonder of all time! To this day, the smash hit is one of the most recognizable songs in the world. With close to half a billion streams total, combining the most popular versions of the song, the cultural impact is undeniable.

The “Macarena” remains one of Billboard’s most popular line dance songs thirty years later! During a time when American culture was at a rebellious stage with its heavy metal and gangster rap, who knew two old guys from Spain could get the country to loosen up a little bit?

There have been line dances that have come and gone throughout the decades, but none have come close to the cultural impact of the “Macarena.” Adults were doing it! Kids were doing it! Grandparents were doing it! Athletes, doctors, Wall Street brokers, blacks, whites, Latinos, young, or old, no one could resist jumping and yelling out “Ayyyy Macarena!”

Final Thoughts

It is quite insane how big this song was back in the mid-’90s. Imagine being nine years old in Mrs. Hummon’s fourth grade class and being forced to dance to this song every day! The last ten minutes of class every day for an entire school year has traumatized me severely. Although, the tune is catchy, it can do serious damage to the brain when listened to, too often.

Even though I am emotionally and physically scarred from the trauma of that daily fourth-grade activity, I can still acknowledge that this was a vibe. This song and dance were viral before viral! There are moments that “break the Internet.” Well, if social media were around back in 95/96, this may have “killed the Internet” with its popularity!
