The Indianapolis Colts have named their starting QB ahead of Week 1. Daniel Jones will start the season under center for Indy as they take on the Miami Dolphins at home to start their season. What does this mean for the former 4th overall pick? Does this mean his time with the Colts is coming to a close? Let’s dive into it!
Colts Name Starting QB
After a shaky end to last season, the Indianapolis Colts needed something positive from the quarterback position. They brought in former first-round pick Daniel Jones in free agency on a one-year $14 million contract. It was an interesting move considering they drafted Anthony Richardson (AR) with the 4th overall pick just two seasons ago.
What Does This Mean For Richardson?
We know he is out of this world talented. He makes throws that maybe only one other player in the league can make but misses the “layup throws.” Not to mention his inability to stay healthy. I thought the addition of Jones would help Richardson. The old expression “Iron sharpens iron” comes into play with AR needing to step up his performance if he wants to keep his job.
Is This A Permenant Change?
Head Coach Shane Steichen is not planning for this to be a short-term change, telling reporters, “He’s the starting QB for the season” and “I don’t want to have a short leash on that.” One of the saving graces of Indy is its division. The AFC South isn’t one of the juggernaut divisions in the NFL. Just two years ago, this team was potentially an inaccurate Gardner Minshew throw away from winning the division. The roster is riddled with talent.
Final Thoughts
This is the right move. Whichever player has been the better of the two should start Week 1 against the Dolphins. This is an interesting position to be in when you draft a player as raw as AR is, and you have to live with the outcome of his up-and-down play on the field. An interesting story to follow as the NFL season kicks off in 16 days.
