BioShock 4 has long been one of those games about which people can say, “No, it actually is coming out!” Hollow Knight: Silksong, Elder Scrolls VI, and others come to mind as well. The game has been announced for a while, and there were even job listings for it in 2024. Then, development hell struck, and it looked like the entire series was in dire straits. The remake of the original was cancelled. Finally, though, there is some good news emerging from Cloud Chamber about the fourth installment.
BioShock 4 Finally Gets Positive Update
We don’t know anything about BioShock 4 other than the fact that it’s currently in development and might be there for a long time. The narrative reportedly did not satisfy 2K Games, and it led to some overhaul for Cloud Chamber, with folks being let go or moved around to reshape the hierarchy of the team. None of it indicated that the game was coming soon or that it’d be any good.
Finally, though, something good has turned up. On Tuesday, former Gears of War producer, is now attached to the project. He confirmed his role on X, saying, “Would you kindly allow me to share some news? Some of you guessed it, I’m returning to 2K to lead a series that means a lot to me as the new Head of the BioShock Franchise.“
Fergusson will now serve as the lead of Cloud Chamber and oversee the development of the next BioShock game, which is the fourth. Notably, Fergusson also mentioned the “franchise extensions” and reaffirmed that the Netflix movie is also in development. It’s unclear what other extensions he’s alluding to as of now.
The producer continued, “While I’m excited to get started in the coming weeks, I recognize the studio restructuring is a difficult time for the team. I’m deeply grateful for the work done so far, and I’m committed to building a BioShock game we’ll be proud of and that our players will love. For now, the firehose of onboarding awaits, and I look forward to sharing more when I can.“
This is good news for the game. Fergusson has a reputation for coming in and saving video games that find themselves in development hell and without a path forward. He notably did that for BioShock Infinite, which is arguably the best of the existing trilogy. Bringing him back to revive and save the fourth installment is a big win.
The movie probably remains a long way away, even with Fergusson coming in to aid. Director Francis Lawrence has been very busy with the Hunger Games franchise, which had a prequel in 2023 and another one on the way for 2026. He also just directed The Long Walk, so it’s very difficult to imagine when he would’ve been able to work on BioShock, but it is still on the docket.
Fergusson also mentioned a lot of onboarding, so it’s going to be a little while before he can officially get things rolling. As of now, BioShock 4 still sounds like it’s not coming any time soon. However, for the first time in a long time, it really does look like it’s coming at some point.
Conclusion
At some point, BioShock 4 is coming out. It’s only a matter of time, especially as the studio continues to try and find its footing to get this one out the door. The fact that the same man who came in for Infinite is back to try and do the same for 4 is a sign that it’s not just going to come out, but that it’ll be another really good video game.
