Crucial Stats
Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are coming off a tough loss to the Eagles last week, 28-22. If this team can limit its turnovers, they are in a great position to win tonight. Carson Wentz threw two interceptions, including a pick-six, in the Philly loss. What was a tremendous positive for the game was that Jordan Addison had his best game of the season with nine catches for 128 yards.
Defensively, this team has been elite. For the season, they rank 10th in points allowed per game, 7th in passing yards allowed per game, 18th in rushing yards allowed per game, 6th in offensive touchdowns allowed, 10th in sacks, and 13th in takeaways per game. Last week was an outlier in terms of the performance they allowed. Giving up 300+ receiving yards to two wideouts is unfathomable for a Brian Flores defense. I expect them to bounce back.
Let’s talk about injuries. JJ McCarthy will miss tonight’s game, his 5th in a row. Aaron Jones will be making his return from injury reserve with a hammstring injury. He is dealing with “significant soreness,” so his touches will be limited. Their offensive line is a mess with injuries from both starting tackles being questionable and missing multiple interior linemen. Lastly, they will be without defensive Swiss Army Knife Andrew Van Ginkle, who has a neck injury.
Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a dreadful performance. They were blasted by the Indianapolis Colts, 38-24. In the loss, Justin Herbert played well. Now, most of his stats came in the second half, when the game was essentially over, but it was still a solid performance. Rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden had one of the best games any rookie has had. He caught seven balls for 164 yards and a touchdown. This offense has the talent to be one of the best in the NFL.
Defensively, the Chargers have taken a step back from the top-two defenses they were last season. This season, they rank 18th in OPPG, 8th in OPYDs, 19th in ORUYDs, 16th in offensive touchdowns allowed, 15th in sacks, and 17th in takeaways per game. They were dominated by Jonathan Taylor last week with 132 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns. Keep your eye on their rush defense tonight.
Turning to injuries, LA could be getting one of their big-time weapons back, Joe Alt. Yes, offensive linemen are considered weapons, ask Jim Harbaugh. He missed the previous three games after suffering a high ankle sprain. If he plays, that protects Herbert’s backside and allows the Chargers to dominate in the running game. A handful of defensive players are listed as questionable, but the majority are depth pieces.
Prediction
The Los Angeles Chargers will defend home turf and win a tight TNF game against the Minnesota Vikings. Without Van Ginkel, I don’t see Minnesota generating enough pressure to get to Herbert. What will be the deciding factor? Despite all the good Carson Wentz can provide at this stage in his career, his performances have been feast or famine. The Vikings lead the league in turnovers per game, and it will rear its ugly head tonight. The Chargers win and cover the three-point spread.
