Halo, PlayStation, Xbox

Halo will be on PlayStation moving forward. Try telling that to someone in the late 2000s, when the console war waged on and the shooter franchise and Xbox exclusive series was in its heyday. They would have laughed at you. But, in 2025, the console wars are all but over, and exclusives are quickly becoming a thing of the past. The shooter series is just the latest example of that dying fad.

Halo to be on PlayStation in the Future

During a recent event, Halo: Campaign Evolved‘s long-rumored remake was officially announced. In the same breath, the future of the series was irrevocably changed. This game will be the first to arrive on any PlayStation device, and this is going to be the norm for the franchise from here on out.

Per Game Spot, community director Brian Jarrard said, “It’s a huge deal. It’s a long time coming. We’re just super excited to be able to welcome even more players now into the franchise we love, to fall in love with Halo the same way we all did 24 years ago. As a community guy, I know the Halo community is super excited to welcome in their friends as well. It’s just going to mean more Halo for everyone. It’s really a new era. Halo is on PlayStation going forward, starting with Halo: Campaign Evolved.”

This is probably the final nail in the coffin for Xbox’s stake in the console war. They have been losing said war, and this feels like the final white flag. Halo is a beloved series that would’ve kept people playing Xbox, but not now that it’s going to be on other platforms. To their credit, PlayStation isn’t necessarily victory-lapping, because they’re also going to be sending exclusives to Xbox and already have with Helldivers 2.

Xbox president Sarah Bond said something recently that echoes the current assumption that Xbox and PlayStation seem to be operating under. “The biggest games in the world are available everywhere. You look at Call of Duty, you look at Minecraft, you look at Fortnite, you look at Roblox … that’s actually what’s really driving community in gaming. That’s where people gather. And the idea of locking it to one store or one device is antiquated for most people,” she said. “You want to be able to play with your friends anywhere, regardless of what they’re on.”

Nintendo is the Last Bastion of the Console War

The console wars weren’t just waged between Xbox and PlayStation, though. Nintendo was involved as well, and it might be argued that they won. The Nintendo Switch set records for sales, and they’re the only company left still doing exclusives. Halo being on PlayStation is mind-boggling, but it’s obviously not as shocking as Mario on Xbox or Link on PlayStation.

Nintendo is never going to relinquish their exclusives, because that is the driver of their sucess. They’re winning because of this, but they also can’t afford to join Xbox and PlayStation in this new era. If Nintendo allows their first-party exclusives to go on other platforms, their console sales will plummet.

While the Switch and the Switch 2 are fun consoles with unique aspects, they’re underpowered. The Switch 2 was likened to a PS4 Pro, and it came out this year. For the entirety of its lifespan, the Nintendo Switch was not even close to the Xbox and PlayStation consoles. That’s not Nintendo’s goal, but if someone could play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on a PS5, why would they bother with a Switch or Switch 2? So don’t expect Nintendo to join even if the console wars are dying out rapidly.

Conclusion

What the future holds for Halo remains to be seen. It hasn’t been as prominent of a series in the gaming world recently, but there are big plans. Whatever those plans are, they won’t be exclusive to Xbox, which marks a huge shift for the series, the platform, and the gaming world as a whole.
