If you had one shot or one opportunity to write this article, would you start typing or get writer’s block? The “Rap God” himself, Eminem, was immortalized 23 years ago when his song “Lose Yourself,” from the soundtrack of the movie “8 Mile,” became the first rap song to win an Academy Award. Even though his palms were sweaty, his knees were weak, and his arms were heavy, he proudly accepted the award, solidifying his place in history. The megahit took the world by storm, and it was difficult to go anywhere in the Detroit area without hearing it blasting from someone’s speakers.
Eminem Makes History!
Marshall Mathers was the star of the Detroit-based, somewhat biographical movie “8 Mile.” Even with the star-studded cast of Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy, Kim Basinger, and a young Anthony Mackie, outside of the rap battle scenes and the scope of the streets of the “313,” the movie, to be honest, isn’t great. The soundtrack, though, is an absolute banger!
Yes, I said soundtrack! Back in the day, when a movie would come out with a Compact Disc, we shortened it to CDs for the kids of today, that would have the songs made or featured for the film. Nowadays, someone would just create a Spotify playlist for their favorite movies, but anyway… “Lose Yourself” was the biggest hit for Eminem’s theatrical debut!
The artist, also known as Slim Shady, gave the city of Detroit an anthem in 2002. Em proved he had evolved past “B Rabbit” by not forgetting the words he wrote down as the crowd got loud. “Lose Yourself” would not only go on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song, but also won two Grammys and an MTV Video Music Award. As of currently in 2025, the song has over 2.7 billion listens on Spotify!
If you already have vomit on your sweater, just continue reading. It is crazy to think this was at the beginning of Eminem’s historical career. In 2002, Slim Shady was on top of the rap and pop world! He recorded three studio albums, including The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show. And one could argue that none of those massively successful albums had a hit as big as “Lose Yourself!”
Before you chew me up, spit me out, and boo me off stage, the cultural impact of this song continues to have a pulse throughout the D. Right off of Woodward in the heart of Detroit, you can find Eminem’s restaurant. It pays homage to one of the songs that shot him into Beatles status, properly named “Mom’s Spaghetti.”
Final Thoughts
If you are from Detroit, there are certain things you take pride in. Could be Motown, hockeytown, the Motor City, Devil’s Night, Faygo, and Coney Dogs. Well, if you haven’t added Eminem to that list, then you are decades behind the rest of us! “Lose Yourself” is one of those anthems that will get the average person hype! Or maybe, like my buddy Scott, you’re working in your shop, thinking this mega-rap ballot speaks directly to them.
I will always remember being a young teen, having my older brother, whom I’ve always looked up to, take me to see my first R-rated movie in the theater. “8 Mile” isn’t the greatest movie, I’ll admit, but being from Detroit, you are embedded with a toughness and grit that the movie displayed, which makes it nostalgic for all of us in the area. So “you better lose yourself in the music, the moment you own it, you better never let it go. This opportunity only comes once in a lifetime, yo!”
