The Golden Globes are not the Oscar’s, but they’re not far behind. The Globes represent some of the biggest awards in the film world, and, unlike the Oscar’s and Emmy’s, they combine movies and television into one big event. In these days, the lines between the two mediums have been blurred a bit, so this makes perfect sense. While the year isn’t quite over, we do know now what shows and movies have been nominated. Here’s what we learned.
What We Learned from 2025 Golden Globes Nominations
One Battle After Another, which would be my begrudging pick for the best movie this year slightly over Sinners, is the big winner here. The film earned nine nominations. Sinners, for what it’s worth, landed seven. Sentimental Value took home eight, with Hamnet receiving six. Wicked: For Good and Frankenstein both took home five.
Best Picture (Drama) is the one to watch. The nominees are Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Sinners. Musical or Comedy includes Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, Nouvelle Vague, and One Battler After Another.
Best Director Nominations, which do not split between drama and comedy, are:

There are so many deserving nominations, and it is genuinely distressing that Chalamet, Plemons, and DiCaprio can’t all come away with one since they’re all in the comedy section, though I’m not sure it’s an appropriate section for some of them.

Best Score:

This award, in my estimation, is Sinners’ to lose, but it is apalling that Bugonia isn’t nominated as well. Greenwood’s One Battle score and Zimmer’s work on F1 are both excellent, but Goransson was impeccable for Sinners.
There aren’t too many major snubs from the nominations, aside from Bugonia not getting a Best Score nomination. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. It’s not always a precursor to the Oscar’s, but when a film or actor dominates the Globes, it usually belies success.
However, I am a little stunned and disappointed not to see any love for The Life of Chuck, 28 Years Later, Superman, Steve, and Mickey 17. Those should have something, and they don’t.
TV Golden Globes Nominations
In the TV department, these were the nominees for Best Series:

- Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building

- Seth Rogen, The Studio
- Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building
- Jeremy Allen White, The Bear
For female actor (drama), it’ll be Kathy Bates (Matlock), Britt Lower (Severance), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Helen Mirren (Mobland), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), or Rhea Seehorn (Pluribus). For comedy or musical, the options are:

- Ayo Edebiri, The Bear
- Selena Gomez, Only Murders in the Building

Conclusion
It has been a pretty great year for movies and television shows. After 2025 was poised to be a down year with 2024 and 2023 being excellent, there have been quite a few surprise hits that have helped bolster this year’s media output.
