Hollywood director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, December 14, 2025. According to law enforcement, this is an ongoing homicide investigation. A family member discovered the two and called the police, who responded to Reiner’s home around 3:40 p.m. local time.
Hollywood Icons
Reiner and Singer were Hollywood icons. Reiner was a fluent actor and director best known for his roles in “The Princess Bride”, “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally.” The couple met on the set of “When Harry Met Sally,” and became involved quickly. They wed in 1989 and have been married for over 30 years with three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Singer was an accomplished producer, actor, and photographer who supported her husband and collaborated on multiple famous projects.
Condolences poured in following the news of the Reiners. Many politicians, actors, and producers took to social media to express their grief and offer their condolences to the family. Many praised the couples for their contributions to Hollywood and remembered them for their activism as well. Outside of Hollywood, Reiner and Singer were passionate about marriage equality and early childhood development. They became strong advocates and helped found the American Foundation for Equal Rights.
In 2016, Reiner spoke with Stephen Colbert at the Montclair Film Festival and admitted that Singer was a huge motivator in becoming an activist. “I can honestly say the reason I’ve done as many things in the political sphere is largely because of her,” he said, lightheartedly, “She is my Bunsen burner that lights the flame in my ass.”
One of His Last Conversations
Reiner spoke with comedian Eric Idle the night he was allegedly murdered. The two first met in Reiner’s father’s home in 1975. Idle shared on social media that they had spoken for more than an hour that night. “Rob Reiner was a lovely man,” he wrote on X. “I spoke to him last night for over an hour.” He recalled the details of their conversation before commenting on the situation. “He was telling me about filming at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future,” he said. “This is so awful. I shall miss him. A clever, talented, and very thoughtful man.”
Investigation Underway
The Los Angeles Police Department held a news conference late Sunday to inform the public of this tragedy. They did not name the couple as the deceased at the time, and are trying to obtain a search warrant for the home. They said they were “not looking for anyone as a suspect or in any other manner.”
The Reiners’ daughter, unfortunately, found her parents slain in their home. She reported they were stabbed to death, and the couple’s son, Nick, is being eyed as a suspect. The family is the one who confirmed the deceased in a statement. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” Reiner’s family said.
So far, no arrests have been made, but the LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said investigators are interviewing family members. According to family members, Nick was a troubled young man, but no further details have been provided. “We’re going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation,” Hamilton said.
More Stars Send Their Condolences
Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband, Christopher Guest, sent a statement to Variety that read, “Christopher and I are numb and sad and shocked about the violent, tragic deaths of our dear friends Rob and Michelle Singer Reiner and our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them.”
Another social media post was written by John Cusack, the first to be directed by Reiner as a teen in “The Sure Thing.” “Shocked by the death of Rob Reiner – a great man,” he said. Jerry O’Connell, the actor who played Vern in “Stand By Me,” also wrote “Love you, Rob. Sincerely.”
