An adaptation of the hit book The God of the Woods is coming to Netflix. Say what you want about the streaming titan, and there’s plenty bad to say about what they’re doing to the future of cinema, but they’re accumulating quite a few epic book adaptations lately. Frankenstein, Train Dreams, and others have hit the streamer from book origins, and Greta Gerwig is working on Narnia for the service. Now, Liz Woods’ hit novel is up next.
Liz Woods’ The God of the Woods Headed for Netflix

Comic book movies may have come and gone, and video game adaptations seem to be all the rage right now. Look no further than The Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, Fallout, Super Mario Bros. Movie, and so many others for examples. But the book adaptation remains on top. Those are seemingly going nowhere.
There have been plenty of big book adaptations this year, including One Battle After Another, The Life of Chuck, Welcome to Derry, and Mickey 17. More are on the way in the future, including The Stand, Carrie, The Housemaid, Sunrise on the Reaping, The People We Meet on Vacation, and plenty more.
You can now officially add Liz Woods’ The God of the Woods to that list. Her time-jumping thriller novel is about a young girl’s absence in the Adirondack mountains about 14 years after her brother went missing in those same woods.
Very little is known about the project so far. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty are executive producing the project for Original Film, and it’s going to be a Sony Pictures Television project. Reportedly, Woods will serve as co-showrunner (with Liz Hannah), writer, and executive producer, so it will likely be very accurate to the 2024 novel.
Though the novel only came out a year and a half ago, this is no surprise. Newer books are getting greenlit for adaptations all the time, and this is an excellent novel that will likely be wonderful in a visual medium. It’s also quite popular and acclaimed.
The book has been highlighted by multiple publications as a top novel to read, and former President Barack Obama shouted it out as one of his favorite books that year. In the singer’s new docuseries on Hulu, The End of an Era, Grammy-winning artist Taylor Swift can be seen listening to the audiobook version of Woods’ novel. Furthermore, according to Netflix, at least one book-to-screen adaptation has been in its top 10 lists every week in 2025.
“We love making TV and can’t wait to bring ‘The God of the Woods’ to life with our partners at Sony and Netflix. We hope everyone falls in love (and hate) with these characters as much as we have,” the two showrunners said in a joint statement per Variety.
We do not currently have a release date for the show, nor an amount of episodes. No one from Barbara Van Laar to Louise Donnadieu has been cast, either. And while Woods is serving in multiple roles for the production, the crew has yet to fully take shape, either. We can expect that this one won’t be released for quite some time.
Final Chapter
The God of the Woods is a fantastic thriller novel that hits several genres and, for my money, will end up as a pretty excellent show with author Liz Woods serving as a screenwriter. It’s the second time she’s worked on an adaptation of one of her novels, and while Netflix is in the news for all the wrong reasons now, this is one good thing that the streamer is involved in.
