It’s not often you see that the second an NBA player becomes available for trade, they not only request one but also demand one. Golden State Warriors’ forward Jonathan Kuminga has demanded a trade from the team this morning, the first opportunity he has been available. Let’s dive into what this means and a few teams to look at.
Kuminga Demands Trade From Warriors
His name has come up in trades the past few seasons, and who could blame teams for being interested? The 6’7″ forward has shown flashes of great potential in the NBA. This is one of the few instances where the youth of a potential star can be frowned upon. What do I mean? Kuminga’s timeline doesn’t match with Steph Curry and the current lifespan of the Warriors.
With Kuminga only 23 years old, the potential is there. In his limited role, mainly coming off the bench, he has put up fine numbers, 12.5 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and shooting 50% from the floor, including 33% from downtown. He is a long defender who can guard 1-4 and can blossom into a great player down the line, but the Warriors need him to reach his ceiling to compete for an NBA Championship right now.
Who Could Be Interested?
I could see the Brooklyn Nets calling and the Warriors being interested in a trade around Michael Porter Jr. for Kuminga. MPJ has reportedly been a name Golden State has been looking to acquire. You add a “win now” player to the Warriors and send Kuminga to a place where he can continue to grow and develop with increased opportunities.
Final Thoughts
I was always a fan of Kuminga. Essentially, a “do it all” player who just needs to be in a situation where he can play free, flourish, or fail on a young team. The Nets have a lot of young talent; don’t be surprised if they add another piece at the trade deadline. Where do you think the 23-year-old forward will end up?
As always, thank you so much for checking out my instant reaction to Jonathan Kuminga demanding a trade from the Warriors, and who I believe will trade for him.
