Super Mario Galaxy Movie

On Sunday morning, Nintendo hosted a Direct live stream to show off the newest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Never mind the fact that it’s hilariously unhinged to host a live stream for less than 10 total minutes to show off a movie trailer.

The new trailer does show off more of the movie, namely Yoshi. In fact, it was introduced by alluding to the fact that fans wondered about Yoshi in the first place. He was in the post-credits scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but he was absent in all the promotions leading up to this trailer.

Fittingly, the green dinosaur was front and center in this new trailer, as were a few other cool characters. Lost in all the green fun might’ve been two things you probably missed: brief but clear homages to Super Mario Odyssey, still the most recent 3D title in the franchise.

You Probably Missed These Odyssey Easter Eggs in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer

Nintendo dropped the second, and probably final, trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Sunday morning. It comes out on April 1, so not much more is likely to be revealed for the follow-up from Nintendo and Illumination to the 2023 billion-dollar hit.

So what we have is what we’re likely to get, but what we were given is pretty awesome. The trailer doesn’t reveal much more of the plot or give any major details away, instead showing Yoshi and Birdo off. It also features two subtle references to Super Mario Odyssey.

In the opening of the trailer, Mario and Luigi come upon a sand world where the characters appear to be of Hispanic heritage. In one specific shot, an upside-down pyramid can be seen, and it looks exactly like an upside-down pyramid from the Odyssey level. Here is a good look.

The longer this scene plays, the more overt it is. The characters are dressed the exact same way as the NPCs in Odyssey, and the terrain is the exact same. Mario and Luigi’s outfits somewhat resemble the garb you can buy in this level in the video game, too.

That’s only one Easter egg, though. There’s another one later on. The first thing anyone ever saw about Super Mario Odyssey was this dinosaur that Mario could, in some levels, take control of with his hat, Cappy. The same exact dinosaur is seen in the trailer when Yoshi, Mario, and Luigi confront it. Here’s a good look.

Those are two pretty obvious references to Odyssey. What makes this interesting is that it might mean there is no Odyssey movie. The first movie was not a direct adaptation or even an overt reference to a specific game; instead, it opted to take elements from tons of different games.

This one, however, appears to be a more straightforward adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy. But since this clearly has major pieces of Odyssey, can there be a Super Mario Odyssey Movie? That remains to be seen. But if nothing else, Odyssey fans can enact the Leonardo DiCaprio pointing meme as I did when this trailer first streamed yesterday.

Conclusion

The first movie had elements from countless games, including Mario Kart and mainline platformer games. This one, while named after a specific game, seems to be doing something similar, at least partially drawing from Super Mario Odyssey while being called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. What does this mean for the franchise moving forward? It’s hard to say, but on April 1, we’ll know a whole lot more about what’s to come!
