Donovan Mitchell, NBA, Cleveland Cavaliers

With the trade deadline passing, there were plenty of NBA teams that made moves and plenty that didn’t. We saw championship contenders stand pat with their current squads, and teams continue to attempt semi-power moves. Let’s dive into some of the interesting moves that I didn’t fully understand or teams that sat on their hands at the NBA trade deadline!

Knicks Fall Short of Giannis

If there was ever a year for the Knicks to swing for the fences, it was this year. When you are in the running for Giannis Antetokounmpo, you must be willing to give up anything, and almost everything, in order to land him. Unless the Milwaukee Bucks weren’t willing to move him at all. However, if there is a chance to acquire him, you need to hit a home run.

With Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton out for the season, it appeared that this would be the Knicks’ year to finally make the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. They made a nice move in trading for Jose Alverado from the New Orleans Pelicans, but it’s not that much of a needle mover. If I were running the team, I would have moved heaven and Earth to land the Greek Freak. Push all my chips in the middle of the table.

Dallas Swaps Ponies for Stallion

Am I shocked that the Dallas Mavericks traded Anthony Davis? No, but if you were to tell me what they would be getting in return, I would have sent you to the psych ward. Are you telling me that the best offer you could get is Khris Middleton, a bunch of role players, and two first-round picks? I don’t care how injury-riddled he can be. Even at his age, he is a walking 25 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks when he plays.

The past calendar year has been GMing malpractice. You give up someone who was going to have a statue outside the arena one day, in Luka Doncic, for a package surrounding AD. Then, fast-forward to today: what do they have to show for it? Max Christie, a handful of first-round picks, and role players. This is no disrespect to Middleton, but his best days are behind him. Dallas should have sold the house, the land, the farm, and the appliances to truly bottom out.

Does the NBA Fear the Beard Anymore?

James Harden, NBA, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers

This is the most all-in move I have seen since the Lakers traded for Anthony Davis. The Cavaliers trading for James Harden is so mind-boggling to me. You trade for a player who is ten years older than the young star you gave up for what? A chance to win the Eastern Conference? Yes, their title odds increase for the next two seasons, but with how the NBA is falling into place around the OKC Thunder’s dominance and the East returning to form next season with Boston and Indy, it’s really do-or-die this season.

I understand the “let’s go for it” strategy, but c’mon now. Trading for a player who has a playoff track record of coming up small in the biggest moments is asinine to me. I love Harden, but I have accepted him as a player. You can’t win with him being one of your two best players on a title contender. Maybe he will play third fiddle to Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley.

Final Thoughts

This was a busy trade deadline. Teams were getting involved left and right. Some are taking big swings, and others are making minor moves. What did you make of the NBA 2025 Trade Deadline? Who do you think made the biggest improvements?
