Canada Mass Shooting

Canada has been plagued by one of the deadliest school shootings in the last several decades. Authorities arrived at a Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon to find nine people dead and over two dozen others injured. The investigation is ongoing, and further casualties are being reported in real time. All of Canada appreciates the outpouring of support and kind words from neighboring communities and countries.

Mass Shooting Casualties

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at around 7:45 a.m., a gunman opened fire at a high school in a small town in northeast British Columbia, Canada, with fewer than 2,500 people. The suspected shooter was found with a self-inflicted wound at the school after police arrived. Authorities also found two more deceased at a nearby home in the township and are assuming the suspect is responsible.

Two victims from the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting were airlifted to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, and 25 other injured individuals were treated at a local medical center. Another person died while en route to the hospital. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Superintendent Ken Floyd said officials “are not in a place now to be able to understand why and what may have motivated this tragedy.”

Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the suspected shooter. “We are unable to confirm identity publicly at this time,” senior media relations officer for the RCMP Staff Sergeant Kris Clark told CNN on Wednesday. They are waiting to release further information and said they would provide updates as they see fit.

Floyd said they are still working to determine how many children were fatal victims of the shooting and following leads to figure out the why. “I think we will struggle to determine the ‘why,’ but we’re gonna try and do our best to determine what transpired that day and what led up to this tragic event,” he said.

The Community and Country Mourn

In a country with strict gun laws, mass shootings are considered rare, unlike in the United States. The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced to the people of the small town in Tumbler Ridge, “the nation mourns with you.” He suspended his current schedule in order to work with officials and offer the support his country needs at this time.

The Peace River South School District has set up support services and a support space for the victims of the mass shooting and the rest of the community. Mental health professionals will be offering support for the next few days.

We recognize that the trauma and impact of this loss are immeasurable. There is no timeline for how each of us will process this grief and immense loss, both individually and as a community,” Superintendent of the school district, Christy Fennell, wrote in a letter to the families. “While words often feel inadequate in the face of such loss, coming together can help reduce isolation and remind us that we are not alone.”

Canada’s Opposition Leader Responds

Canada’s opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said this was an “appalling shooting” and he mourns for the “heartbreak and hell” parents and victims are enduring. “The fact that this took place at a secondary school, it makes it even more tragic,” Poilievre told reporters. “As a father, I can’t even imagine the phone calls that parents might have received. I can’t imagine the heartache and hell that they’re living through at this moment.”

Poilievre encouraged Canadians to support the families and community by uniting and working together in the wake of such a tragedy. “I encourage all Canadians to pray for the community and pray for the family as we go forward and take the necessary steps to support them,” he said.
