After only leading the final lap of the race, Tyler Reddick took home the victory at the 68th Daytona 500 today. His car, owned by basketball great Michael Jordan and fellow racer Denny Hamlin, made a last-lap pass at the Daytona International Speedway. Afterwards, Jordan and Hamlin hugged Reddick in Victory Lane and jointly hoisted the Harley J. Earl Trophy with their driver.
Reddick Triumphs in the 500
Reddick is the 25th different driver to lead a lap today for a new Daytona 500 record. Hamlin, driving his Joe Gibbs Racing car, was involved in the final caution when he and his teammate Christopher Bell collided with nine laps to go. After that came the final push to finish the race.
Former Daytona winners Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Joey Logano finished second and third. Chase Elliott took the lead at the start of the final lap when Carson Hocevar was spun off the track. Reddick, with help from teammate Riley Herbst, made contact with Elliott, causing him to crash. Then Reddick drove past him to take the lead for good in NASCAR’s biggest event of the year. Elliott wound up fourth and looked completely dejected after the race.
