Sonic, SEGA

The next Sonic game has some big shoes to fill. Sonic Frontiers was a well-received change of pace for the franchise (even if I found the game to be tedious in the open world and too bogged down with collection tasks), and Sonic X Shadow Generations was a return to the best days of the series.

Whatever comes next either has to be really good, like Generations, or redefine the formula, like Frontiers. A new leak has surfaced with plenty of details about what’s next for the blue hedgehog, and it could end up being one of the most exciting titles in Sonic history.

What a New Leak Says About the Next Sonic Title

As of now, SEGA has not yet announced a new game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They have announced the next two movies in the film franchise, though. The fourth mainline movie is coming in 2027, and a Sonic event movie is slated for 2028. Speaking of the movies, a new leak suggests that the next game will have “closer ties” to the movie franchise.

Per V SCOOPER on X, the game is also set to have a stronger story. The story in a Sonic game is usually secondary to the gameplay, and it certainly was for Frontiers. This time, though, they’re aiming to have a viable narrative attached to the game.

Additionally, it will have a “larger player ensemble.” This likely means that the titular blue hedgehog won’t be the only playable character. Knuckles, Tails, and others could be playable depending on the cast of characters included with the narrative.

The leak also noted that SEGA is hoping to have long-term support for the game, which may hint at some live service elements. They’re also planning for this game to “stand alongside the biggest game releases.” It looks like they anticipate this being one of the top games of the year. It’s likely going to be released in 2027.

Sonic hasn’t quite rebranded into a movie character, as he is still very prominent in the gaming space and had a popular release just last year. However, with the success of the movies (and the spinoff Knuckles series), he is growing in that field. It makes perfect sense to start tying in the movies and games.

This is what Fallout has done, setting a television show in the universe and timeline of the games. The Sonic movies have sort of adapted existing games, but they could easily start from now and set them in the same universe and timeline for some continuity.

That might end up driving up interest in both areas. Gamers will be more enticed to see the movies since they connect, and those who love the movies might pick up a game to see where the story goes or get more of the version of the characters they like best.

It is very important to note that this is all based on a leak. Plenty of leaks in the gaming world come true, especially when those leaks come from things found in the data files of an existing game like Fortnite. However, when it comes to a game that doesn’t exist, it’s imperative to take this information with a grain of salt.

Conclusion

The next Sonic game, should these leaks come true, is poised to be a game-changer for SEGA. The franchise is certainly not on thin ice or trending in the wrong direction, but a true hit could reassert this series as one of the best in gaming. It used to be, and with the right new game, it could be again, making the movie and game franchise one of the biggest media entities today.
