After waiting for Insomniac Games’s next update on its superhero adaptation, Marvel’s Wolverine, the comic supergiant announced an official release date. X-Men fans will finally experience James “Logan” Howlett’s journey again exclusively on the PS5 on Sept. 15, 2026. As they count the days, here’s what to expect from the game.
What is Marvel’s Wolverine About?
Insomniac Games portrays Wolverine being followed endlessly by an undercover organization. Logan decides to travel and search for the answers to uncover the secrets about his past before becoming the yellow-suited X-Man with adamantium claws.
Marvel’s Wolverine creative director Marcus Smith explained the storytelling process for the character. He said in the “Behind the Claws” commentary, “Part of the route to who he is that he is an unreliable narrator. He has gaps in his memory, so Wolverine doesn’t really remember a lot about his life. And that’s got to be an extremely frustrating aspect.”
Developing James “Logan” Howlett
Smith shared aspects of bringing Logan’s personality to life beyond his trademark visceral imagery. Marvel Games executive producer Eric Monacelli went into further detail on keeping the Canadian badass accurate to his comic counterpart. “[Wolverine] is this ball of rage and fury, but he could turn on a dime, and he could be very kind and tender in the next moment.”
Project director Jess Reiner-Reed added, “When you have that first moment that we show in gameplay, there’s so much emotion you can feel behind his eyes. He looks relentless, greedy, angry, but also he looks maybe a little sad.”
Playing the role of the clawed berserker is Liam McIntyre. He’s best known as Spartacus in Starz’s Spartacus franchise after Andy Whitfield left the franchise. Insomniac and Marvel recruited the actor because his performance offers believability, as Wolverine is someone who expresses his emotions physically more than with words.
McIntyre gladly took the opportunity and wanted to honor the X-Men fandom to fit Insomniac Games’ narrative. “My job is to try and find the essence of who Wolverine is, especially as he applies to our story,” he said on the “Behind the Claws” video. “People hurt him. People take from him. People betray him. He still fights for people who can’t fight for themselves. It’s one of the greatest honors of my life.”
The Full-On Wolverine Experience
Insomniac Games held their promise to stay true to Wolverine’s iconic violent carnage. Enemies will get their bodies stabbed, pummeled, cut, and torn apart by his claws. The game does not hold back on the blood as the 2025 gameplay trailer featured it in almost every swipe.
Players will also experience Logan’s body condition between cutscenes and in-game. The X-Man has a regeneration factor that allows him to recover from any injury inflicted on him. Instead of just flesh, Insomniac Games gives a nod to the comics to show his adamantium skeleton.
Outside of combat, Wolverine will be traversing on foot and on motorcycles. The game appears to have players traveling through his memories out of order to play with his unreliable narrative. They will also fight in different outfits, including his iconic flannel cowboy look.
Will Five Years in the Making Be Worth It?
According to GamesRadar, the development of Marvel’s Wolverine will turn five years old when it releases in September this year. The game was first announced on Sept. 9, 2021, for Sony’s State of Play, with Logan sitting at a bar and revealing his claws at the end of the announcement trailer.
McIntyre expressed his excitement as the game became an important part of his parenting journey. He said on X (then Twitter), “I’ve been working on this for almost as long as my son has been alive. I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time…not long now!” And it appears this project’s release date is not a coincidence either. On his Instagram, he celebrated his wife, Erin McIntyre’s, birthday on Sept. 18, which is three days after launch.
