Pragmata is officially one more month away from its official release, and Capcom wants its followers to playtest the game for last-minute improvements. According to Steam, the game’s minimum requirements are owning a PC with an i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500 CPU, an RX 5500 XT or RTX 1660, Windows 11, and 16 GB of RAM.

While I do have an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U on a Lenovo Ideapad 3, the laptop can only run a max of 12 GB of DDR4 RAM and runs on Vega 8 Mobile graphics. We’ll be seeing how far I can get in the Sketchbook demo on these restrictions and see if lowering them is worth the performance.

The Low-End AMD Laptop Setup

The AMD Ryzen 5 3500U settings took about two game crashes to figure out how to bypass the 16 GB and RX 5500 XT requirements. Thankfully, Pragmata’s graphics optimizer has a processing load limit. You can find it on the center-right of the menu here:

This meter was super helpful as it can detect and warn you with a text box if you are about to reach near or above your memory limit. The Vega 8 Mobile can run DirectX 12 and Vulkan games to an extent if it has additional RAM to work with. Despite being in the same family as the RX 5500 XT, it carries 20% of its memory processing power. It is supported by the latest AMD Radeon Graphics driver, Adrenaline 26.1.

Pragmata manages to adapt to my 12 GB of DDR4 RAM. The game’s maximum graphics memory can reach up to 6.93 GB, but due to my laptop’s hardware, I can only reach around 4 GB of processing power. I used Steam’s recommended 1080 resolution and played the Sketchbook demo on variable FPS for smoother performance. I turned off all of the cache and dynamic visual settings to prevent the system from overheating.

I did keep on AMD FSR1 to reduce the pixels and keep the image quality on a good scale. You can choose to remove the depth of field to prevent camera blurs, but I kept it on to see if it breaks the demo or helps keep the gameplay stable with little camera blurs. Vega 8 Mobile can’t provide frame generation, as it does not include generative-AI functionality.

Finally, I had to go to the Display settings and turn off the Auto quality. Auto will detect your monitor’s capabilities to handle different color schemes to determine a range of brightness and color. Turning it off will help Pragmata render the models and textures since the Lenovo Ideapad 3’s monitor handles standard color resolution better.

How Did Pragmata Play?

Surprisingly, Capcom got this game to run nicely on 1366x768p and 1920x1080p. The image quality is somewhat distracting if you set textures on the lowest settings, turn off the shadows, and have anti-aliasing on medium. You are more likely to be focused on dismantling the AI machines than Pragmata’s environments with low-end settings on.

The only time the Sketchbook demo heavily dropped frames was in the large open areas. I didn’t experience slowdown from small enclosed spaces or suffer from screen stuttering when encountering more than two enemies. Low effects choke the frame rate to the point of temporarily freezing for 7 seconds, so keep the effects on high. I managed to beat Pragmata’s demo twice with barely any problems and happily enjoyed the hack-and-shoot gameplay of Hugh and Diana.

However, I cannot recommend playing the game on 1280x720p. The smaller the resolution, combined with weaker graphical hardware, causes the Sketchbook demo to crash shortly after setup. You will be given a Japanese report timeout pop-up informing you that your PC or laptop cannot handle the execution file. I tried twice and got kicked out of the game.

Did Going Below Minimum Hardware Worth the Risk?

The results convinced me that it is possible to play Pragmata on a 2017 work laptop. But I don’t recommend doing it with 12 GB of RAM. More modern games are demanding high amounts of memory, with 16 GB being the standard minimum to render larger and more detailed game assets. You are better off owning the desktop version of the AMD Ryzen 5 3500 or upgrading to a 3500U Pro that has two laptop models that can handle 32 GB and 64 GB of RAM at the max.

I tested the impossible after hearing Capcom made Resident Evil 9: Requiem optimizable for both modern and older PC generations. It’s such a perfect move as the ongoing RAM Crisis is gradually raising prices, with some manufacturers catering to only AI data centers with DDR5. PC and tech experts were even impressed by it being playable on DDR3 computers.

RE9’s technical feats showed that the production studio learned from its mistakes after Monster Hunter Wilds’ poor graphics settings. I hope Pragmata will follow in its footsteps to make the game more accessible for those who currently can’t own a PS5 or a high-end gaming laptop. The full game will now be released for PS5 and PC on April 17.
