The beginning of the 2026 NFL year is underway! Over the past week, there has been significant player movement in the league. From stars finding new homes to teams looking to buy a contending team. With the resources all these teams have at their disposal, some overpay, while others find bargains in the contracts they issue. Let’s dive into the three teams I found that will receive the best bang for their buck this upcoming season!

NFL’s Sneaky Playoff Contender: New York Giants

With the addition of John Harbaugh earlier this offseason, we knew the Giants were going to be in on a plethora of free agents and try to contend in a winnable division, the NFC East. Despite finishing 4-13, this team has enormous upside, especially after the additions they made.

Their biggest acquisition was tight end Isaiah Likely, who played under Harbaugh the previous four seasons. When you have a young quarterback, the best thing you can do is surround him with weapons. Likely had a down year, but should have a larger role with the Giants this season. The G-Men signed him to a 3-year $40 million contract.

On the defensive side of the ball, their key additions were linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and cornerback Greg Newsome. Edmunds led the Bears last season in tackles with 112, while Newsome is a young DB with much promise. Newsome is on a 1-year $8 mill deal, a low-risk/high-reward contract, and Edmunds was signed to a 3-year $36 million deal.

NFL’s Consistency Kings: Pittsburgh Steelers

In terms of the ROI a team can get for the money they gave out, I love the moves the Pittsburgh Steelers made. They added a plethora of defensive players who can help a team on that side of the ball. For a team that has been one of the highest-spending teams in the NFL over the past few seasons, they have been an above-average defense, but not where they should be given their spending.

They signed Jamel Dean from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who is coming off a great statistical season. He only allowed two touchdowns, a passer rating of 63.1, and a 49.2 completion percentage last season. He and Joey Porter Jr. will be an excellent cornerback tandem. Pittsburgh also brought in safeties Darnell Savage and Jaquon Brisker, as well as defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph.

The Steelers did sign a new face in the running back room. Bringing in Rico Dowdle on a 2-year, $12.25 million contract. Dowdle rushed for 1,076 yards and scored a career-high six touchdowns despite only starting in 11 games. He should be a great fit in a backfield with Jaylen Warren. As a Steelers fan, I am excited for the moves the franchise made this offseason.

NFL Free Agency Winner: Las Vegas Raiders

There isn’t a prize for winning NFL free agency, but if there were a winner, it would be the Las Vegas Raiders. I love every single move this organization made. Starting with Tyler Linderbaum. Did they overpay? Yes, but for one of the best players at his position, you overpay for talent. With the franchise drafting Fernando Mendoza with the number one pick this year, this will ensure their offensive line has a heartbeat for their rookie.

Let’s talk about their front-seven acquisitions. Kwity Paye, Quay Walker, and Nakobe Dean are great pickups for a defense that was one of the worst in the NFL last season. Personally, I didn’t know how everything was going to go through when the Maxx Crosby trade was receded. With it appearing Crosby is back to stay, every defensive player they brought in meshes around the superstar.

One of their moves that I believe was a sneaky addition, but will have a big impact, was Jalen Nailor. Coming from the Minnesota Vikings, Nailor was a great deep threat in his first four years. He averages 15.4 yards per catch for his career and 15.3 YPC last season. A 27-year old, speedy receiver in an offense with Klint Kubiak calling plays will come with big plays left and right. Don’t sleep on this acquisition.

Final Thoughts

For these teams, I didn’t take into consideration resigning players or trades. This was purely about the talent these franchises brought in from free agency. I am excited to see how free agency affects this season’s NFL Draft and how teams will prepare for it. What were your takeaways from the first week of free agency?
