Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie raised alarm bells when she abruptly exited from the show’s live broadcast only 90 minutes into the episode. Her departure immediately sparked online debates and questions about her sudden actions, especially considering her mother, Nancy Guthrie, has yet to be found.

Unexpected Departure

Co-host Craig Melvin addressed the situation on air, but kept it brief and calm. “Savannah had to leave a little early. She’ll be right back tomorrow, though,” he said, reassuring that this was a one-time fluke.

Afterward, the show continued like normal, and no further explanation was provided. E! News reported that the Today show representative did not provide a public comment on the situation. 

Savannah’s unexpected departure on the May 6 airing comes weeks after she returned following a two-month absence due to the disappearance of her mother. She chose to focus on her family and assist authorities in the investigation, but unfortunately, all leads had been exhausted. 

Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home in the Catalina Hills of Arizona on the evening of January 31, 2026. Her case made national news, and her family pleaded on public platforms for help in locating their missing loved one. 

The family reported Nancy missing the following day, on February 1, after she failed to attend an online church service at a friend’s home. Only a few days into the investigation, authorities were declaring it an abduction. They recovered Nest camera footage from the 84-year-old’s front door, which showed a masked man tampering with the device before presumably breaking in. 

The Investigation

Authorities quickly declared her home a crime scene and began sweeping the area, finding concerning evidence such as Nancy’s blood on the front porch, a similar glove in a field miles away, and a separate person’s DNA that could not be identified. 

Viewers of the Today show were deeply affected by this news, as they held Savannah Guthrie near and dear to their hearts. The sympathy widened once investigators revealed that Nancy was in a fragile condition. She required daily life-saving medication, which is assumed she did not have access to. 

According to the Guthrie Family, Nancy suffered from physical limitations and was unable to walk long distances alone. So, investigators know she would not have made it far had she left on her own accord, nor would she have if someone forced her to walk. 

Investigators recovered more footage showing a car in front of Nancy’s residence in the middle of the night she disappeared, and they searched endlessly for the route it took, but it ended up at a dead end. The vehicle was not further identified, and that trail went cold. 

Police clarified that they do not believe Nancy wandered away and confirmed she was not suffering from a mental illness of any sort, such as dementia. They clearly informed this was a kidnapping, but the lingering question to this day is why.

Family Suffers Loss

Savannah Guthrie has been open about her emotions regarding this unforeseen incident and has pleaded with the public multiple times. She expressed how devastating this has been for her family and spoke with Today co-host Hoda Kotb in an interview last month about how agonizingly painful it has been not knowing what happened.

She said the uncertainty is what is hardest, as she imagines the fear her mother is experiencing. She lies awake at night because the thoughts are too unbearable to sleep through.

As the investigation continued, the public began speculating online that the family was responsible for Nancy’s disappearance. However, authorities cleared the three children as suspects: Savannah Guthrie, Camron Guthrie, and Annie Guthrie. 

Savannah condemns those rumors online and strongly defends her siblings. She says they deeply loved their mother and emphasized that everyone in their family adored her. The rumors added to the pain that they were already enduring.
